It then explores the indigenous societies at the time of the Spanish Conquest, the hierarchy of the chiefdom, and the development of slavery. By identifying with a legacy which goes beyond the 500 years of colonialism, life the Caribbean people can began to bind together as a region and claim a rich inheritance from the earliest forms of cultural expression that emerge in this volume.
