This story tells the adventures of Antonious. a hapless British slave as he trails around Northern Britain in a quest for a box.

The story is set in Britain, just after the murder of Emperor Domitian; Nerva is on the imperial throne, but his position isn't safe as the Empire is a dangerous breeding ground of plots. Added to this is the deteriorating security situation in the north of Britain, where the Roman army faces a simmering insurgency. Into this toxic mix comes Ant, dutifully following his mistress Junia as she tries to retrieve a box that was left to her by her dead uncle.

The story mixes the history of Rome and Roman Britain with the voyage of Ant and the betrayals and tribulations he faces as he tries to retrieve the box and comes to terms with who he is.
