De Spiegel der Nederlandsche Elenden. Getoont door een Liefhebber der Waerheyt ende der Nederlanden welvaert was written by the Anglo-Dutch author, antiquary and polemist Richard Verstegen (c. 1550-1640). Verstegen (also known as Verstegan, Versteganus and Rowlands) argued against the Dutch Revolt (1566-1648) in which 'province has risen against province, city against city, Netherlanders against Netherlanders have risen in hostility'. According to him the Calvinists were usurpers and their theology was equated to tyranny. His willingness to always defend his Catholic faith is reflected in the pamphlet.
