Description

Description A BROADCAST RECEIVING DEVICE
[1] The present invention relates to a broadcast receiving device wherein noise coming from the broadcast is reduced.
[2] In broadcast receiving devices, before the RF (Radio Frequency) singal coming from the antenna input is provided to the screen, various noise reduction methods are applied to this signal. When the tuner provided in broadcast receiving devices is usually adjusted to the frequency of the channel selected, it converts the broadcast at the said channel to IF (Intermediate Frequency) signal and then transfers it to the integrated IF demodulator. IF signal is converted to CVBS (Chroma Video Burst Sync) signal at the integrated IF demodulator and then at the integrated video decoder it is turned into an image to be displayed on the screen.
[3] Depending on the quality of the RF signal coming from the antenna input by means of the tuner, noise of various frequencies and varios ratios occur at the said signal.
[4] Various noise reduction methods are used in the state of the art for reducing the level of noise interfering with the broadcast that the user will watch on the screen. Control of the noise reduction level can be performed dynamically or by the user selecting one of the noise reduction stages predetermined according to the degree of the noise interfering with the broadcast. The noise ratio information required to reduce noise dynamically is generally provided by the integrated video decoder that is used. In dynamic noise reduction methods, one of the noise reduction levels predetermined according to the noise ratio information received from the integrated video decoder is selected automatically.
[5] Some implementations in the state of the art are disclosed in the USA patent document No. US5812673 and the Japanese patent documents No. JP58181375, JP8079203, JP2000252900, JP7288716. In these documents, upon detection of the noise level in the signal coming from the antenna to the tuner, a noise reduction level is selected automatically and the noise reduction process in the selected level is applied to the signal received from the antenna input.
[6] However when dynamically applying noise reduction levels to the signal coming from the broadcast, if a noise reduction level which is higher than required is applied, there occurs undesirable side effects such as decrease in clarity of the image and ghosting in motion scenes.
[7] Furthermore, the user may want to decide for himself/herself in what ratio the features like sharpness, noise, ghosting of the video signal will be selected. In applications where noise reduction levels are applied to the signal coming from the broadcast upon user's choice, certain noise reduction levels are defined for the noise reduction stages that the user will select. However in some cases, the user may apply a noise reduction level which is higher or lower than required. For example, when the user chooses not to apply a noise reduction level at a broadcast where there is noise, clarity of the image again deteriorates.
[8] The objective of the present invention is to realize a broadcast receiving device in which, when a noise reduction process is applied to the broadcast signal according to the selection of the user, the side effects originating from the noise reduction process applied to the broadcast signal are decreased.
[9] In the broadcast receiving device realized to fulfill the objective of the present invention and defined in Claim 1 and in its dependent claims, the amount of reduction of the noise which interferes with the broadcast to be displayed on the screen is left to the user's control. However after the user sends her/his selections via the user input to the receiver, the controller controls whether or not the input complies with the amount of received noise.
[10] The user decides in what ratio it will decrease the noise of the broadcast by means of a menu. Noise reduction stages are provided on the said menu. Each reduction stage corresponds to a predetermined reduction level. Number of reduction levels is more than the number of stages that the user can select on the menu. When the user is selecting the reduction stage of her/his preference, the controller compares the level of the noise coming from the broadcast with a predetermined threshold value. If the level of the received noise is higher than the threshold value, the controller multiplies the corresponding values of the noise reduction stages on the user menu with a specific coefficient to enable application of higher values of noise reduction levels to the received broadcast. If the value of the noise interfering with the broadcast signal is lower than the threshold value, the corresponding values of the stages on the menu are left unchanged by the controller.
[11] Even though the noise reduction process applied to the broadcast by the inventive broadcast receiving device is subjected to a control, the controller which performs the said control is activated only when the user makes a preference which is insufficient for the coming noise ratio. If the coming noise signal is lower than the threshold value, the user's preferences are not modified. However if the coming noise signal is higher than the threshold value, the stage values are raised to an upper level since the stages applied by the user to reduce noise remain insufficient. This way, the user corrects the image defects originating from noise according to her/his own preferences. Additionally, in applications where noise reduction process is performed automatically or manually with the inventive device, when a noise reduction level which is higher than the level desired by the user is applied, the resulting side effects are reduced.
[12] The broadcast receiving device realized to fulfill the objective of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying figures, in which;
[13] Figure 1 is the schematic view of the inventive broadcast receiving device
[14] The parts in the figures are numbered individually where the numbers refer to the following:
[15] 1. Broadcast receiving device
[16] 2. Antenna
[17] 3. Tuner
[18] 4. Noise detector
[19] 5. Controller
[20] 6. Receiver
[21] 7. Screen
[22] 8. Image processing unit
[23] The inventive broadcast receiving device (1) comprises an antenna (2) for receiving the broadcasts, at least one tuner (3) which locates the broadcast selected by the user, a noise detector (4) which detects the amount of noise in the broadcast coming to the tuner (3), a controller (5) which determines the amount of noise and in what ratio the noise will be reduced according to the preference of the user, a receiver (6) which transmits the preferences of the user made for example by a remote control to the controller (5), a screen (7) and an image processing unit (8) which processes the broadcast signal on which noise reduction process has been performed and sends it to the screen (7).
[24] Noise reduction stages which can be selected by the user to reduce the level of noise coming from the broadcast are defined in the controller (5). The said noise reduction stages are presented to the user (7) with a menu (A) on the screen. One noise reduction level corresponds to each noise reduction stage defined in the controller (5).
[25] In the inventive broadcast receiving device (1), after the user decides the broadcast to be watched, the tuner (3) locates the broadcast via the antenna (2). The broadcast is then transmitted to the noise detector (4). At the noise detector (4), signal quality of the broadcast is measured. After its signal quality is measured, the broadcast signal is then delivered to the controller (5). At the controller (5) it is evaluated in what noise ratio the signal is coming with and it is checked whether or not the noise signal coming from the broadcast is lower than a predetermined threshold level. Then, it is waited for the user to select the noise reduction stage to be used. In order for the user to decide on the noise reduction stage, the signal coming from the broadcast including noise is shown to the user on the screen (7). Then the user views the noise reduction menu (A) on the screen (7) by means of the remote control. The noise reduction levels on the menu include stages like "Closed", "Low", "Medium", and "High". In the controller (5), n+1 noise reduction levels are defined for the n noise reduction stages to be shown on the menu (A), n+1 level is the noise reduction level with the highest value that can be applied to the broadcast. The controller (5) either leaves the noise reduction levels corresponding to the noise reduction stages on the menu unchanged or changes them with an upper value in accordance with the threshold value of the noise signal received from the noise detector (4).
[26] In the inventive broadcast receiving device (1), even if the user selects the stage
"Closed" from the menu (A), some noise reduction level is applied to the coming signal according to the quality of the signal.
[27] When "n" expresses total number of stages that the user can select, "m" stands for the number of selections for the stages selected by the user and for the levels that correspond to these stages.
[28] In one embodiment of the invention, when the user starts any "m" stage for reduction of noise in the image on the screen (7), if the noise of the signal transmitted from the noise detector (4) to the controller (5) is lower than the threshold value, the noise reduction level m is applied for the stage m selected by the user. As long as the noise of the signal is lower than the threshold value, the level (n+1), which is the noise reduction level with the highest value, is not used for any stage provided on the menu. With this embodiment, when the user selects any stage, it is prevented to apply a noise reduction level, which is higher than required, to the broadcast signal. Thus, problems like decrease in the sharpness of the image or ghosting, which may occur upon application of a noise reduction level higher than required, are prevented (Table 1).
[29] Noise reduction stages contained in the menu Noise reduction levels corresponding to noise reduction stages
[30] Closed (Stage 1) Level 1
[31] Low (Stage 2) Level 2
[32] Medium (Stage 3) Level 3
[33] High (Stage 4) Level 4
[34] - Level 5
[35] Table 1: Levels corresponding to noise reduction stages when noise of the signal is lower than the threshold value
[36] In another embodiment of the invention, when the user starts any stage for reduction of noise in the image on the screen (7), if the noise of the signal transmitted from the noise detector (4) to the controller (5) is higher than the threshold value, the levels defined for the stages that the user selects are shifted to their upper values thereby a higher noise reduction level is applied to the signal coming from the broadcast. For example, when the user starts level m, the noise reduction process at the stage (m + 1) is applied to the signal coming from the broadcast. If the level of the noise coming from the broadcast is too high and the user has applied a low noise reduction level to the signal, an insufficient reduction process which might take place is prevented with this embodiment. Thus, it is ensured that noise is better eliminated from the broadcast signal (Table -2).

[41] Medium (Stage 3) Level 4
[42] High (Stage 4) Level 5
[43] Table 2: Levels corresponding to noise reduction stages when noise of the signal is higher than the threshold value
[44] In the inventive broadcast receiving device (1), user selections are made variable according to the threshold value of the noise in the broadcast. In the present broadcast receiving device (1), the user decides on the quality of the image on the screen (7) according to her/his desires and also the user is prevented from making a decision which does not comply with the quality of the received signal.
