Living Electronic MusicWhether created in a studio or performed on stage, how does electronic music reflect what is living? Drawing on ideas that explore environments and the changing situations of composition and performance, this title offers a contribution to the study of contemporary music, bridging history, aesthetics and the ideas behind performance practices. |

Living Electronic Music traces the history of electroacoustic music since its beginnings with Pierre Schaeffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen, up to the present (or at least 2007), with special attention on the changing role of live performance as technology has changed. The book is thorough and extremely well-researched, but stylistically very accessible. Emmerson's investigation is always rooted in real-world examples of electroacoustic music, and does not presume that the reader brings an expert level of knowledge to the table. This book has been a great help to me with my doctorate research, as one of the only texts that addresses the issues surrounding the problematic combination of live electronics with acoustic instruments.
Great book on electronic and experimental music
