The Ilberts in India, 1882-1886: An Imperial Miniature Courtney Peregrine Ilbert (1841-1924) was born in Thurlstone, Devon into a respected family. In 1874 he married Jessie Bradley and they became the parents of four daughters. Between 1882 and 1886 Courtney and his family lived in India while he was a Legal Member of the Viceroy's Council. At the time, the Viceroy to India was Lord Dufferin. Their time in India was filled with both hardship and adventure. Courtney later served in London as a Parliamentary Counsel and Clerk of the House of Commons. The four daughters married and descendants presently live in England. |
