Joseph Conrad

This wide-ranging study provides detailed analysis of five of Conrad's principal works (Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes). It examines the extent to which the impact of Conrad's early life and his cultural inheritance is reflected in the themes of his books. Conrad's preoccupation with the crisis of language and the breakdown of community and individual identity is addressed and special attention is given to his distinctive narrative strategies, ranging from black comedy to nihilistic despair.
