"Extract of a Letter from Mr. Stanhope to Mr. Secretary Hedges, dated Hague, July, 1703. "After I had fent my Letters to the Poft Tuesday Night, I received the enclosed; which I fend you, "with the Cover, just as I received it: Nor do I know, or can guefs, from whom it came. However, "the Contents are of fuch Concern, that I think it my "Duty to tranfmit it to you. I have only this One "Remark to make upon it, that it is dated as from "Amfterdam, and marked on the Outfide Two Stivers "for the Poft; whereas the Letters from Amfterdam "conftantly pay Three."

"There is fomething pernicious to our Queen and Her Government working in England, Scotland, and Ireland; for here are great Remittances of Money "from Paris and from Lifle: To the Duke of Hamilton, 50,000 Piftoles; to Sir Robert Hamilton Knight, 25,000 Piftoles; to William Worth Efquire, 86 25,000 Pistoles: Thefe Two latter are in Ireland. "Moft of this Money is already drawn for. This Money has paffed through my Hands. To appear in "this, would ruin me and my Partners. However, "this I thought my Duty. Adieu."

"I have heard nothing more of Remittances to Scot"land from this Country, Lifle, or any other Part, "fince the mystical Letter, of which about Two Months ago I fent you the Original. Nothing is come fince "of that Kind to my Knowledge, either from the fame or any other Hand; but fince, what has lately hap"pened in that Country makes it fufpicious there was "fome Ground for that Firft Advice. I will try if, "among my Friends at Amfterdam, I can make any far"ther Discovery; in order to which, if you could "fend me back that fame Letter I fent you, it might be "of Ufe, by the Lights it might give us by the Hand "and Character."

"I call GOD ALMIGHTY to witnefs, (to my Know"ledge) I never offended the Queen or this Government, except in my coming to England; which Fault "was occafioned by my Ignorance and Neceffity; being "told, "That, fince I went with a Pafs to France, I fafely might return." The Certainty of my wanting "Bread in a strange Country if I stayed longer (my "little Fortune being in England), and all Commerce being stopped under fo great a Penalty, it was impoffible for me to hope to get a Licenfe, or any Re"turn of Money.

farther, that there are feveral Points related in the "Memorial that are otherwise confirmed; for I have "feen a Letter to Brigadier Maitland, from One of "his Officers, wherein he tells him, "That he had "Intelligence of a Highland Hunting, where Six Hun"dred of the beft of the Laird of Grant's Men were "to be in Arms; and the Duke of Hamilton and the Marquis of Athol were to be there." This Letter "I have fent to Mr. Nairn. Major General Buchan " acknowledges," That one Mackenzie was put into The "Baftile before he came away." Befides, the total De"sertion of all the Cavaliers, except my Lords of Balcaras "and Wigtoun and Dunmore, at that Inftant, when these "laft Orders came from France, and their joining in "all Things contrary to the Prerogative of the Crown, "with the Vote this Day of arming of the Country, "do mightily inftruct this Declaration; and it agrees "pretty well with the Advertisement Mr. Stanhope had "about Money to be fent hither. But, whatever is in "the Matter, I thought it my Duty to reprefent it to "Your Majesty.

"I must beg Leave to know from Your Majefty, if "that Perfon fhall apply to me, and be willing to own "what he has faid, how I fhall ufe him. It is ftrange "enough, that in his Circumftances he fhould have "faid fo much; and it can hardly be expected, that he "will forfault what he may expect from France, without "getting fome Terms from Your Majefty.".

Holyrood Houfe, September the 25th, 1703. "I have seen that Perfon of whom I formerly made "Mention to Your Majefty; he confirms all that he had "faid to thofe Perfons who had dealt betwixt us, and "adds many Things more. He fays, "He was let into "all the Secrets of the Correfpondence of Scots-men with "St. Germain's ;" and tells plainly, "That very many "do correfpond there." I am bound to tell Your Ma"jefty (though I ought not to believe him), that he " fays, "He faw a Letter laft Winter, written by my "Lord Tarbat to my Lord Middleton; bearing, that "he was made Secretary of State; and that, in a short "Time, the Duke of Queensberry was to be shifted out, "fo as he was to be fole Secretary, and would have "all the Management of Scots Bufinefs in his Hands; "that, to fecure their Friends, there would be a general "Indemnity paft, and the North Country and High"lands would be made all of a Piece; that the Duke "of Queensberry had received Five Thousand Pounds "from the Family of Hanover; that my Lord Middle"ton faid, "He knew the Duke of Hamilton was "capable to be bribed; but did not believe the Duke "of Queensberry would have taken Money." He de"clares, "That Mr. Ogelby of Boyn has frequent Cor"refpondence, which he begun when he went over to "France about his Marble;" yet I muft do this Gentle"man the Right to tell Your Majefty, that he did be"have himself fairly in the Parliament; and there was none of the Gentlemen, who called themselves Ca

This Perfon is willing to come to London, and to give what Accounts he knows, "provided he may do it fecretly; and he offers to re"turn to France, and difcover all the Correfpondence "and Designs; but fays, "If he falls under Obfervation, or that he be discovered, he runs the Rifque to be "broke on the Wheel." He fays, "What Money "is tranfmitted yet from France, is only for the Ufe "of fome particular Perfons; and that it comes by Bills "to London, and brought hither in Specie.

He declares, "That there were Three Letters "written by the late Queen at St. German's; whereof "One was directed to the Duke of Hamilton, as Earl "of Arran, which was delivered by one Captain "James Murray; the other was committed to the Perfon "himself, to deliver to the Duke of Gordon, which he "actually did, before he had entered into any Corre"fpondence with me; and the Third was directed to "the Lord Murray, now Marquis of Athol, which was "not delivered when he began this Correfpondence; and that he found the Way to be Mafter of that "Letter before it was delivered;" which he gave to me,

"I confefs, it is hard to think how one fhould know, or be ready to reveal, so much; yet the delivering of "that principal Letter, and the fhewing his own Com« Wales, as King James the Eighth and Third, which, "miffion, under the Hand and Seal of the Prince of "he fays, was the Firft Paper fealed with his new Seal; "thefe do give Credit to what elfe could not have been "fo well trufted.
