ment, is pleafed to fignify to the Houfe of Peers by "Meffage, what He defigned to have spoken to both "Houses from the Throne. His Majesty, in the First His Majefty, in the Firft "Year of His Reign, did acquaint the Parliament, that "Commiffioners were authorized in Scotland, to treat with "fuch Commiflioners as fhould be appointed in England, "of proper Terms for uniting the Two Kingdoms; and at the fame Time expreffed His great Defire of fuch an "Union. His Majefty did alfo, in a Meffage of the "Twelfth of February One Thoufand Six Hundred "Ninety-nine, to this Houfe, declare His Opinion of "the great Advantages which would arife to both King"doms, if they were more nearly and compleatly united. His Majefty is fully fatisfied, that nothing can contri"bute more to the prefent and future Peace, Security, "and Happiness, of England and Scotland, than a firm "and entire Union between them; and He cannot but hope, that, upon a due Confideration of our prefent "Circumftances, there will be found a general Difpofi"tion to this Union. His Majefty would esteem it a peculiar Felicity, if, during His Reign, fome happy Expedient "for making both Kingdoms One might take Place ; "and is therefore extremely defirous that a Treaty for "that Purpose might be fet on Foot, and does in the "most earnest Manner recommend this Affair to the "Confideration of the Houfe."
