PREFAC E. THE following work was undertaken as a relaxation from painting, and was intended to give, in slight sketches, the most striking scenery of the counties of Devon and Cornwall. An intimate local knowledge, and a passion for the beauties of nature, necessarily introduced the author to scenes which it would be difficult for a casual observer to discover; and wishing to communicate to the public in the least expensive manner the knowledge of the picturesque treasures of these counties, the plates are all executed by himself from his own drawings: however he may regret the defects of their execution, he is certain they will be found accurate by those who |
