to follow the steps of Kitchener to Khartoum, or of Columkille to Iona? The answer of the Irish nation is assured. They have responded to the all of their poet :

"Oh Ireland, be it thy high duty,

To teach the world the might of moral beauty,
And stamp God's image on the struggling soul."

NEW BOOKS.

M. E. L. B

The Sea Prince. By E. P. LARKEN.

Published by Jarrold and Sons.

Illustrated by Jessie Bayes.

THIS book of fairy tales should be a great favourite with juvenile readers. In it we meet with any number of fairies, good and bad; with tyrannical kings, lovely princesses, and brave princes; and their truly wonderful adventures are related in a picturesque and convincing manner. The book reminds us a good deal of Grimm's Fairy Tales, and will, we fancy, be considered not unworthy of a place beside that nursery classic. The binding is handsome and the printing excellent; this latter a very important consideration in books intended for children. The artistic illustrations also deserve a special word of praise.

Cicero Pro Cluentio, with Notes and Introduction by W. PETERSON, M.A., Edin. and Oxon. London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd.

THIS edition should prove invaluable to all students of the famous speech of Cicero in defence of Cluentius. The Introduction is admirable, for it tells the whole story in detail, indicating the difficulties under which the great orator laboured in this case, and the means he took to overcome them; and it also points how much of the oration is a statement of fact, and how much is the exaggeration of the special pleader. In fact, the Introduction brings vividly before the student all the circumstances of the case, thus enabling him to take a real and intelligent interest in the speech itself. The Introduction also contains excellent notes on the Lex Cornelia de sicariis et Veneficis, and on the text of the various manuscripts. The notes which follow the text of the oration are ample and clear. To the 100 pages of text 160 pages of notes are appended.

The printing, binding and general make-up of the book leave nothing to be desired. The price is three shillings and sixpence.

The Elements of Euclid.

I. TODHUNTER, D. Sc., F.R.S. Revised and enlarged by S. L. Loney, M.A. London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd. THIS latest addition to the series of books on mathematical subjects written by Mr. Loney on the basis of the late Dr. Todhunter's wellknown text-books, is in every way on a par with its predecessors. The propositions are clearly put, and the work is made as short as possible by the judicious use of recognised signs. The clearness and simplicity which characterised the original Todhunter's Euclid have been perfectly preserved in this work. The device has been adopted in the book of making the given lines and figures thicker than the construction lines. This should prove of great assistance to all students of Euclid, but especially to those who are beginning to study the subject. This work is uniform with the earlier books of the series. The price of the book is four and sixpence.
