To Lead and to Serve: The Report of the Review of the See of CanterburyThis review analyzes the role of the Archbishop of Canterbury and considers the Archbishop's duties as they fall into six principal roles: Diocesan Bishop of Canterbury; Metropolitan for the Southern Province - where he has responsibilities for the administration of 30 sees in the South and Midlands of England; Primate of All England - his position as the episcopal leader of the Church of England, and from which he speaks to the nation; Anglican Communion - where he is, by virtue of his tenure of the See of St Augustine, first amongst equals in relation to the 38 Provinces of the world wide Anglican Communion; ecumenism - where he leads for the Church of England in relation to other Christian faiths in England and abroad; and interfaith - where he leads similarly in respect of other religions. The review concludes that the requirements of all the roles have intensified, particularly those of the Anglican Communion. However, the report acknowledges that none of these functions can be discontinued and that it is essential for the Archbishop to retain his links with his diocese. The report makes recommendations for change in all the principal areas which will help free the Archbishop of Canterbury to concentrate on his more strategic functions. |
