To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One,

[blocks in formation]

1. GREAT God, whose universal sway
The known and unknown worlds obey,
Now give the kingdom to thy Son,
Extend his power, exalt his throne.

2. Thy scepter well becomes his hands,
All heaven submits to his commands;
His justice shall avenge the poor,
And pride and rage prevail no more.

3. With power he vindicates the just,
And treads th' oppressor in the dust;
His worship and his fear shall last,
Till hours, and years, and time be past.

4. As rain on meadows newly mown,

So shall he send his influence down;
His grace on fainting souls distills,
Like heavenly dew on thirsty hills.

5. The heathen lands, that lie beneath
The shades of overspreading death,
Revive at his first dawning light,
And deserts blossom at the sight.

6. The saints shall flourish in his days,
Dressed in the robes of joy and praise;
Peace, like a river from his throne,
Shall flow to nations yet unknown.

Magistrates warned.

[Ps. 82.

1. AMONG th' assemblies of the great, A greater Ruler takes his seat; The God of heaven, as Judge, surveys Those gods on earth, and all their ways. 2. Why will ye, then, frame wicked laws! Or why support th' unrighteous cause? When will ye once defend the poor, That sinners vex the saints no more? 8. They know not, Lord, nor will they know; Dark are the ways in which they go; Their name of earthly gods is vain, For they shall fall and die like men. 4. Arise, O Lord, and let thy Son Possess his universal throne, And rule the nations with his rod: He is our Judge, and he our God. 206.

Grace and Glory.

[Ps. 97. L

1. TH' Almighty reigns, exalted high
O'er all the earth, o'er all the sky;
Though clouds and darkness veil his feet,
His dwelling is the mercy-seat.

2. O ye that love his holy name,
Hate every work of sin and shame:
He guards the souls of all his friends,
And from the snares of hell defends.

8. Immortal light, and joys unknown,
Are for the saints in darkness sown;
Those glorious seeds shall spring and rise,
And the bright harvest bless our eyes.
4. Rejoice, ye righteous, and record
The sacred honors of the Lord;
None but the soul that feels his grace,
Can triumph in his holiness.

[blocks in formation]

5. Then what my thoughts design to do,
My hands, with all your might pursue,
Since no device, nor work, is found,
Nor faith, nor hope, beneath the ground.
6. There are no acts of pardon passed
In the cold grave to which we haste;
But darkness, death, and long despair,
Reign in eternal silence there.

[Hy. 188. 209.

1. WHAT equal honors shall we bring
To thee, O Lord our God, the Lamb,
When all the notes that angels sing
Are far inferior to thy name?

2. Worthy is he that once was slain,
The Prince of Peace that groaned and died,
Worthy to rise, and live, and reign
At his almighty Father's side."

8. Honor immortal must be paid

Instead of scandal and of scorn; While glory shines around his head, And a bright crown without a thorn.

4. Blessings forever on the Lamb,

Who bore the curse for wretched men:
Let angels sound his sacred name,
And every creature say, Amen.

[Hy. 596.

Conversion of the Jews.
1. ARISE, great God! and let thy grace
Shed its glad beams on Jacob's race;
Restore the long-lost, scattered band,
Recall them to their native land.

2. Their misery let thy mercy heal,
Their trespass hide, their pardon seal;
O God of Israel! hear our prayer,
And grant them still thy love to share.
8. How long shall Jacob's offspring prove
The sad suspension of thy love!
Lord, shall thy wrath forever burn!
And wilt thou ne'er, appeased, return?

4. Thy quickening Spirit now impart,
And wake to joy each grateful heart;
While Israel's rescued tribes in thee
Their bliss and full salvation see.

[Hy. 468. 210. For Sabbath Evening; at Home. [Hy. 671.

1. LIFE is the time to serve the Lord,
The time t'insure the great reward;
And while the lamp holds out to burn,
The vilest sinner may return.

2. Life is the hour that God hath given,
To 'scape from hell, and fly to heaven;
The day of grace, and mortals may
Secure the blessings of the day.

3. The living know that they must die;
But all the dead forgotten lie;
Their memory and their sense are gone,
Alike unknowing and unknown.

4. Their hatred, and their love, is lost;
Their envy buried in the dust;
They have no share in all that's done
Beneath the circuit of the sun.

1. LORD, how delightful 't is to see
A whole assembly worship thee!
At once they sing, at once they pray;
They hear of heaven, and learn the way.
2. I have been there, and still would go,
"Tis like a little heaven below:
Not all that careless sinners say,
Shall tempt me to forget this day.
3. O write upon my memory, Lord,
The texts and doctrines of thy word!
That I may break thy laws no more,
But love thee better than before.

4. With thoughts of Christ, and things divine,
Fill up this foolish heart of mine;
That, finding pardon through his blood,
I may lie down, and wake with God

[blocks in formation]

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below;

9:23

Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Fa-ther, Son, and Holy Ghost.

[blocks in formation]

1. LORD, I am thine; but thou wilt prove
My faith, my patience, and my love:
When men of spite against me join,
They are the sword, the hand is thine.

2. Their hope and portion lie below,

"Tis all the happiness they know;
"Tis all they seek; they take their shares,
And leave the rest among their heirs.

3. What sinners value I resign;

Lord, 'tis enough that thou art mine:
I shall behold thy blissful face,
And stand complete in righteousness.

4. This life's a dream, an empty show;
But the bright world, to which I go,
Hath joys substantial and sincere;
When shall I wake and find me there?

5. O glorious hour! O blest abode!
I shall be near and like my God!
And flesh and sin no more control
The sacred pleasures of the soul.

6. My flesh shall slumber in the ground,
Till the last trumpet's joyful sound;
Then burst the chains with sweet surprise,
And in my Saviour's image rise.

[blocks in formation]

1. SWEET is the work, my God, my King,
To praise thy name, give thanks, and sing;
To show thy love by morning light,
And talk of all thy truth at night.

2. Sweet is the day of sacred rest,
No mortal cares shall seize my breast;
O may my heart in tune be found,
Like David's harp of solemn sound.

3. My heart shall triumph in my Lord,
And bless his works, and bless his word;
Thy works of grace, how bright they shine!
How deep thy counsels, how divine!

4. Fools never raise their thoughts so high;
Like brutes they live, like brutes they die;
Like grass they flourish, till thy breath
Blasts them in everlasting death.

5. But I shall share a glorious part,
When grace bath well refined my heart,
And fresh supplies of joy are shed,
Like holy oil to cheer thy head.

6. Sin, my worst enemy before,

Shall vex my eyes and ears no more;
My inward foes skall all be slain,
Nor Satan break my peace again.

7. Then shall I see, and hear, and know,
All I desired or wished below;
And every power find sweet employ.
In that eternal world of joy.

213.

Divine Protection.

3. This heavenly calm, within the breast,
Is the dear pledge of glorious rest,
Which for the church of God remains;
The end of cares, the end of pains.

[Ps. 121. i. 4. In holy duties let the day

1. Up to the hills I lift mine eyes,
Th' eternal hills beyond the skies;
Thence all her help my soul derives,
There my almighty refuge lives.

2. He lives-the everlasting God,

That built the world, that spread the flood;
The heavens with all their hosts he made,
And the dark regions of the dead.

3. He guides our feet, he guards our way;
His morning smiles bless all the day:
He spreads the evening veil, and keeps
The silent hours, while Israel sleeps.

4. Israel, a name divinely blest,
May rise secure, securely rest;
Thy holy guardian's wakeful eyes
Admit no slumber, nor surprise.

5. No sun shall smite thy head by day;
Nor the pale moon with sickly ray
Shall blast thy couch; no baleful star
Dart his malignant fire so far.

6. Should earth and hell with malice burn,
Still thou shalt go, and still return,
Safe in the Lord; his heavenly care
Defends thy life from every snare.

7. On thee foul spirits have no power;
And, in thy last departing hour,
Angels, that trace the airy road,
Shall bear thee homeward to thy God.

[blocks in formation]

In holy pleasures pass away;
How sweet, a Sabbath thus to spend,
In hope of one that ne'er shall end!

[blocks in formation]

1. THUS far the Lord has led me on;
Thus far his power prolongs my days;
And every evening shall make known
Some fresh memorial of his grace.

2. Much of my time has run to waste,
And I, perhaps, am near my home;
But he forgives my follies past,

He gives me strength for days to come.

3. I lay my body down to sleep;

Peace is the pillow for my head;
While well-appointed angels keep
Their watchful stations round my bed.

4. Thus, when the night of death shall come,
My flesh shall rest beneath the ground,
And wait thy voice to rouse my tomb,
With sweet salvation in the sound.

To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One,

9:

Be honor, praise, and glory given, By all on earth, and all in heaven.

Longing after God.

[Ps. 63. i.

217.
1. GREAT God, indulge my humble claim,
Thou art my hope, my joy, my rest:
The glories that compose thy name

Stand all engaged to make me blest.

2. Thou great and good, thou just and wise, Thou art my father and my God; And I am thine by sacred ties,

Thy son, thy servant, bought with blood.

8. With heart, and eyes, and lifted hands,
For thee I long, to thee I look;
As travelers in thirsty lands

Pant for the cooling water-brook.

4. With early feet I love t'appear
Among thy saints, and seek thy face:
Oft have I seen thy glory there,

And felt the power of sovereign grace.

5. Amid the wakeful hours of night,

When busy cares afflict my head, One thought of thee gives new delight, And adds refreshment to my bed. 6. I'll lift my hands, I'll raise my voice, While I have breath to pray or praise; This work shall make my heart rejoice, And spend the remnant of my days.
