Be honor, praise, and glo- ry given, By all on earth, and all in heaven.

286.

Creation and Providence. [Ps. 104. i. 7. He makes the grassy food arise,

1. My soul, thy great Creator praise; When clothed in his celestial rays, He in full majesty appears,

And, like a robe, his glory wears.

2. The heavens are for his curtains spread,
Th' unfathomed deep he makes his bed;
Clouds are his chariot, when he flies
On winged storms across the skies.

3. Angels, whom his own breath inspires,
His ministers, are flaming fires;

And swift as thought their armies move
To bear his vengeance or his love.

4. The world's foundations by his hand
Are poised, and shall forever stand;
He binds the ocean in his chain,
Lest it should drown the earth again.

5. The swelling billows know their bound,
And in their channels walk their round;
Yet, thence conveved by secret veins,
They spring on hills, and drench the plains.

6. God, from his cloudy cistern, pours

On the parched earth enriching showers:
The grove, the garden, and the field,
A thousand joyful blessings yield.

And gives the cattle large supplies;
With herbs for man, of various power,
To nourish nature, or to cure.

8. How strange thy works! how great thy skill!
All lands thy boundless riches fill;
Thy wisdom round the world we see;
This spacious earth is full of thee.
287.

Jehovah supreme.

[Hy. 59.

1. ETERNAL God-almighty cause
Of earth, and sea, and worlds unknown;
All things are subject to thy laws,
All things depend on thee alone.

2. Thy glorious being singly stands,
Of all, within itself, possessed;
Controlled by none are thy commands;
Thou, from thyself alone, art blest.

3. To thee alone, ourselves we owe,
To thee alone, our homage pay;
All other gods we disavow,

4.

Deny their claim, renounce their sway. Spread thy great name thro' every land, All idol-deities dethrone;

Subdue the world to thy command,

And reign, as thou art-God alone.

9:23 2-24

To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One,

[Ps. 3. ii. 3. I saw the opening gates of hell,

288. God our Confidence. 1. THE tempter to my soul hath said,"There is no help in God for thee:" Lord, lift thou up thy servant's head; My glory, shield and solace be. 2. Thus to the Lord I raised my cry,He heard me from his holy hill; At his command the waves rolled by; He beckoned, and the winds were still. 3. I laid me down and slept,-I woke;

Thou, Lord, my spirit didst sustain; Bright from the east the morning broke,Thy comforts rose on me again.

4. I will not fear, though arméd throngs Surround my steps in all their wrath; Salvation to the Lord belongs;

His presence guards his people's path. 289. Deliverance from Despair. [Ps. 18. i. 1. THEE will I love, O Lord, my strength, My rock, my tower, my high defence; Thy mighty arm shall be my trust, For I have found salvation thence.

2. Death, and the terrors of the grave,
Stood round me with their dismal shade;
While floods of high temptations rose,
And made my sinking soul afraid.

With endless pains and sorrows there, Which none, but they that feel, can tell,While I was hurried to despair.

4. In my distress I called my God,

When I could scarce believe him mine;
He bowed his ear to my complaint;
Then did his grace appear divine.

5. With speed he flew to my relief,

As on a cherub's wing he rode;
Awful and bright as lightning shone
The face of my deliverer, God.

6. Temptations fled at his rebuke,-
The blast of his almighty breath:
He sent salvation from on high,

[blocks in formation]

2. But ere this spacious world was made,
Or had its first foundations laid,
Thy throne eternal ages stood,
Thyself the ever-living God.

3. Like floods the angry nations rise,
And aim their rage against the skies:
Vain floods that aim their rage so high!
At thy rebuke the billows die.

4. Forever shall thy throne endure;
Thy promise stands forever sure;
And everlasting holiness

Becomes the dwellings of thy grace.

2. Begin, my soul, the heavenly song,—
A burden for an angel's tongue :
When Gabriel sounds these awful things,
He tunes and summons all his strings.

3. Proclaim inimitable love!
Jesus, the Lord of worlds above,
Puts off the beams of bright array,
And veils the God in mortal clay.

4. He that distributes crowns and thrones,
Hangs on a tree, and bleeds, and groans:
The Prince of life resigns his breath;
The King of glory bows to death.

[Hy. 85. 5. But see the wonders of his power!-
He triumphs in his dying hour;
And while by Satan's rage he fell,
He dashed the rising hopes of hell.

1. ETERNAL Source of every joy!
Well may thy praise our lips employ,
While in thy temple we appear,
Whose goodness crowns the circling year.

2. Wide as the wheels of nature roll,

Thy hand supports and guides the whole!
The sun is taught by thee to rise,
And darkness when to veil the skies.

3. The flowery spring, at thy command,
Perfumes the air, and paints the land;
The summer rays with vigor shine
To raise the corn, and cheer the vine.

4. Thy hand in autumn richly pours
Through all our coast redundant stores;
And winters, softened by thy care,
No more the face of horror wear.

5. Seasons and months, and weeks and days,
Demand successive songs of praise;
And be the grateful homage paid
With morning light and evening shade.
6. Here in thine house let incense rise,
And circling sabbaths bless our eyes,
Till to those lofty heights we soar,
Where days and years revolve no more.
292.
The Redemption of Christ.
1. THE mighty frame of glorious grace,
The brightest monument of praise
That e'er the grace of God designed,
Employs and fills my laboring mind.

[Hy. 148.

6. Thus were the hosts of hell subdued,
And sin was drowned in Jesus' blood:
Then he arose; he reigns above,
And conquers sinners by his love.

7. Who shall fulfill this boundless song?
The theme surmounts an angel's tongue;
How low, how vain are mortal airs,
When Gabriel's nobler harp despairs!

293.

The spiritual Harvest.

[Hy. 444.

1. THE waving fields of golden corn,
With beauty hill and plain adorn;
And earth, with God's rich goodness
crowned,

In joyful plenty smiles around.

2. But lo, to our admiring eyes,

Still lovelier, brighter prospects rise;-
Rich harvests, where salvation grows,
Their fair celestial fruits disclose.

3. See sinners pressing to embrace
The offer of forgiving grace;
Redeemed from hell with price divine,
In heaven they shall forever shine.

4. There they that reap, and they that sow,
Shall everlasting triumphs know:
And shouts of thankfulness and joy
Their blest eternity employ.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below,

93

Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Fa-ther, Son, and Holy Ghost.

294.

Christ and his Church.

[Ps. 45. v. 295. Praise for temporal Blessings. [Ps. 68. iv.

1. THE King of saints, how fair his face,
Adorned with majesty and grace!
He comes with blessings from above,
And wins the nations to his love.

2. At his right hand, our eyes behold

The queen arrayed in purest gold:
The world admires her heavenly dress,
Her robes of joy and righteousness.

3. He forms her beauties like his own:
He calls and seats her near his throne:
Fair stranger, let thy heart forget
The idols of thy native state.

4. So shall the King the more rejoice

In thee, the favorite of his choice; Let him be loved, and yet adored, For he's thy Maker and thy Lord. 5. O happy hour, when thou shalt rise To his fair palace in the skies, And all thy sons, a numerous train, Each like a prince in glory reign. 6. Let endless honors crown his head; Let every age his praises spread; While we with cheerful songs approve The condescensions of his love.

1. WE bless the Lord, the just, the good, Who fills our hearts with joy and food; Who pours his blessings from the skies, And loads our days with rich supplies.

2. He sends the sun his circuit round,
To cheer the fruits, to warm the ground;
He bids the clouds, with plenteous rain,
Refresh the thirsty earth again.

3. "T is to his care we owe our breath, And all our near escapes from death: Safety and health to God belong,

He heals the weak, and guards the strong.

4. He makes the saint and sinner prove The common blessings of his love: But the wide difference that remains Is endless joy and endless pains.

5. His mighty hand his saints shall raise From the deep earth, or deeper seas, And bring them to his courts above; There shall they taste his special love.

296.

The Faithfulness of God. [Ps. 89. ii. 6. He sees th' oppressor and th' oppressed,

1. FOREVER shall my song record
The truth and mercy of the Lord:
Mercy and truth forever stand,
Like heaven, established by his hand.

2. Thus to his Son he sware, and said,-
"With thee my covenant first was made;
In thee shall dying sinners live;
Glory and grace are thine to give.

3. "Be thou my prophet, thou my priest;
Thy children shall be ever blest:
Thou art my chosen King; thy throne
Shall stand eternal, like my own."

4. Now let the church rejoice, and sing
Jesus, her Saviour, and her King;
Angels his heavenly wonders show,
And saints declare his works below.

297.

And often gives the sufferers rest;
But will his justice more display
In the last, great, rewarding day.

7. [Let the whole earth his power confess;
Let the whole earth adore his grace;
The Gentile with the Jew shall join
In work and worship so divine.]

[blocks in formation]

Praise for God's Mercy. [Ps. 103. i. 3. Ye, who your native vileness mourn,

1. BLESS, O my soul, the living God;
Call home thy thoughts that rove abroad:
Let all the powers within me join
In work and worship so divine.

2. Bless, O my soul, the God of grace;
His favors claim thy highest praise:
Why should the wonders he hath wrought
Be lost in silence and forgot?

3. T is he, my soul, that sent his Son
To die for crimes which thou hast done;
He owns the ransom, and forgives
The hourly follies of our lives.

4. The vices of the mind he heals,

And cures the pains that nature feels:
Redeems the soul from hell, and saves
Our wasting life from threatening graves.

5. Our youth decayed his power repairs;
His mercy crowns our growing years:
He satisfies our mouth with good,
And fills our hopes with heavenly food.

And to the great Redeemer turn,
Arise, his gracious call obey,
And be baptized without delay.
