dismay our heart and conscience plainly tell us, that we are verily guilty towards thee, and yet we are aware but of a comparatively small part of those sins which are exposed to the eye of Omniscience. Search us, O God, and know our hearts, try us and know our thoughts; discover to us those wicked ways which are in us, and lead us in the way everlasting. Let thy word be a lamp to our feet, and a light to our path; and while we are making our way through the wilderness of this world, may our regards be fixed upon the invisible recompense of reward, till at last we are received into the city of habitation, and enter the temple of God to go no more out for ever. To this great pursuit, may all meaner ones give way, and may we no longer be deceived and blinded by the God of this world, or tempted to sell our birthright for that which satisfieth not. O may we listen to the invitations of the Gospel to buy the pearl of great price, and gold tried in the fire; to lay up treasure in heaven, where neither moth corrupteth, nor thieves break through and steal; to keep our lamps burning like those who are waiting for their Lord, when he cometh with ten thousand of his saints, and in the glory of his Father, to take vengeance upon those that obey him

not, and to receive his faithful followers into the joy of their Lord. Let us then gird up the loins of our mind, and run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who is faithful to keep that which we have committed to him against the great day, and to whom with the Father and Holy Spirit be everlasting honour and glory. For the Lord's Day Evening.

O Lord, at the close of another Sabbathday we come to seek thy blessing on the sacred duties in which we have been engaged: we adore thee that thine ear is not heavy but that thou hearest always those who humbly and sincerely pray unto thee. Prosper thy word wherever it has been preached to day; may we love the truth, and by it be more than ever weaned from this world, and taken up with the things of another. Since thou requirest us to make a diligent improvement of thy gifts, let us not by neglecting the gospel render it a savour of death unto our souls. May we never attend in thy house, and hear thy word, and sit as thy people sit, and worship thee with our lips while our hearts are far from thee; but, oh! accompany thy word with thy Holy Spirit, that so it may bring forth good fruit to the glory of thy name. May we be followers of Christ as dear children, may we walk in love as those who have learned of him, and ever have our conversation in

simplicity and godly sincerity. May our zeal be quickened to more frequent and earnest breathings of soul towards thee in the coming week; to greater delight in reading, meditation, and prayer, to more life and affection in private and in family devotion. May we shew that we hold fellowship with thee on thy holy days, by afterwards walking in the light. May those around take knowledge of us that we have been with Jesus; let our profiting appear unto all men. May we be very cautions never to do or say any thing which would bring a reproach on the gospel which from time to time is faithfully preached unto us: preserve us from ever giving occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme that holy name by which we are called. Keep us mindful that our obligations to love and serve thee are in proportion to the privileges we enjoy if we have received the Lord Jesus Christ let us not turn again to folly. O Lord we pray unto thee that the benefits of the christian sabbath may be extended far and wide; that souls may be converted from idols to thee the living God, and the reign of death be destroyed in our own land may we see greater reverence for thy day; may many be brought to call the Sabbath a delight, holy and honourable, who now say what a weariness is it; and oh! may the day-star arise and

shine on every land which hitherto has not been cheered by its glorious life-giving beams. May the heathen know thee, may thine ancient people the Jews be brought to acknowledge and adore the true Messiah, and be gathered in with the fulness of the Gentiles. May all who preach thy word be found faithful to its doctrines, strengthen them with thy mighty power, and may those especially who are gone forth to distant lands to proclaim thy grace to every guilty fallen child of Adam, find thee a very present help. And now be with us; forgive, for the Redeemer's sake, all our short comings and iisdoings; especially remember not against us the sins of our holy things. Sanctify us by thy word; make us meet for that sabbath-keeping above which shall never end; there, with all thy chosen ones, may we ascribe dominion, might, majesty, and power, to him that sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb for ever.
