It was, like the counterpane on the bed, a piece of patch work, and in this instance the squares of a chessboard had been taken as a design. Selecting a fragment of stuff, she trimmed it into the required shape, and with tailor-like precision stewed it into its allotted corner. For fancy work she had not much taste or time, but in the long hours she was forced to pass at her husband's bedside she strove thus to utilize the odds and ends of the shop.
