General at Montreal.—Brevet-Major W. Bellairs, 49th Foot, has been appointed Deputy Assistant Qartermaster-General at Barbadoes, vice Captain H. B. Brady.—Captain H. Montgomery, 42nd Foot, has vacated his appointment as Aide-de-Camp to Major-General Cameron, C.B.—Captain H. F. White, 40th Foot, was, by the last accounts, acting as Aide-de-Camp to General MacArtbur, at Victoria, vice Lieutenant Hotbam, 11th Foot.—The Colonelcy of the 71st Highland Light Infantry has been conferred on Lieutenant-General T. E. Napier, C.B., who accordingly vacates the 16th Foot. The Colonelcy of the 16th has been given to Major General Cecil Bishopp.— By the appointment of Major-General C. Bishopp to the Colonelcy of the 16th Foot, a Good Service Pension of £100 per annum is placed at the disposal of His Royal Highness the Commander-in-Chief, and a vacancy takes place in the Unattached pay of 25s. per day.—The decease of LieutenantGencral Sir William Herries has placed at the disposal of His Royal Highness the General Commanding-in-Chief the Colonelcy of the 68th Light Infantry.—Captain Crawley, not Lieutenant Greetham, loth Hussars,has been appointed Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Smith, commanding the Troops in the Northern District.—Captain A. L. Kuper, C.B., has been appointed to fill the last vacant Good Service Pension. Since the last quarterly Navy List was published four pensions have been given away, viz.:— those held by Rear-Admirals Sir George Back, John M'Dougall, W. F. Lapidge, and Michael Quin, which have been bestowed upon Captains R. S. Robinson, John Robb, Aug. L. Kuper, C.B., and B. J. Sulivan, C.B.— Captain Sheffield, of the 21st Fusiliers, is appointed Aide-de-Camp to MajorGeneral Trollope, commanding the 1st Infantry Brigade in Canada.

ADMIRALTY ORDERS. Rotal Marines.Sergeants' Good Conduct Pat.—An Admiralty Circular, dated 20th May, says, that "The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, having had under consideration the provisions of a War Office Circular, No. 36, dated 16th January, 1857, relating to Good Conduct Pay ; as well as the Admiralty Regulations on this head, dated 16th January, 1849, by which the extra rates lapse on promotion to the rank of sergeant, are pleased to direct that, from and alter the 1st April, 1857, all sergeants of the Royal Marines now serving, and all who may be herealter promoted to that rank, shall be .allowed to retain, in addition to the established pay of their rank, the Good Conduct Pay of which they were, or may be, in possession at the date of their promotion. It is, however, to be clearly understood, that it is not intended to make applicable to the rank of sergeant any of the provisions of the Good Conduct Regulations, by which a further increase of Good Conduct Pay may be obtained, nor to subject sergeants to the forfeiture prescribed by those Regulations while holding that rank ; but every sergeant reduced will be subject to the conditions prescribed by Admiralty Circular, No. 88, dated 28th July, 1851.


Notice has been given to all persons interested therein, that preparations are makiug for the distribution of proceeds arising from the salvage services rendered to the merchant vessel Mary Pleasants, by her Majesty's ship Leopard, between the lllh and 17tb of November, 1855. Also for the distribution of proceeds arising from the slave vessel, name unknown, captured on the 19th of October, 1855, by her Majesty's ship Plumper. Due notice will be given by future advertisements in the London Gazette, of the date proposed for the commencement of distribution; and, at the same time, the amount of an individual's share in the respective classes will be announced.

"albion.''—Notice has been given that preparations are making for the distribution of proceeds arising from the Servian vessel, St. Elena, captured on the 27tb April, 1855, by her Majesty's ship Albion. Those of the officers and ship's company only who were present at the capture are entitled to participate. ^_^

Arctic Search.—The following is an extract from a letter addressed by Captain M'Clintock to Mr. S. R. Graves, the Chairman of the Liverpool Shipowners' Association:—

"I intend to sail about the end of June from Aberdeen, and proceed to Barrow Strait; ascertain that the provisions, stores, and boats left at Port Leopold and Beeching Island by the recent searching expeditions are in good order, in the event of my having to fall back upon them; examine the state of the ice in Peel Strait, and, if practicable, proceed down it into the unknown area. Should I not succeed here, I intend to return to Port Leopold, and proceed down Piince Regent's Inlet to Bellot Strait, and there make another attempt to pass into and through the field of search to Victoria Land, where I shall winter, and in the ensuing spring, before the thaw sets in, complete the entire exploration and search by means of sledges drawn by men and by dogs. In endeavouring to reach Victoria Land, it is my intention to avoid, if possible, any risk of becoming involved in the ice; and, should I not succeed in reaching Victoria Land, I will return to Bellot Strait to pass the winter, as we know by experience that the retreat of the ship from there amounts almost to a certainty. From Victoria Land the homeward voyage is equally certain, but by way of Behring Straits. The vessel is a three-masted screw schooner yacht, with foretopsail and topgallantsail; the topsail reefs from the deck; decidedly a clipper; diagonally built, 132 feet long over all, 320 tons builder's measurement, with a light draught of water; trunk engines of 30-horse power; crew numbering 30 individuals, including an Esquimaux interpreter. Almost all will be old shipmates of my own in former Arctic voyages; they shall be fed and clothed as in the Government expeditions, and receive double pay. I, therefore, anticipate no difficulty in keeping up precisely the same discipline as that which we found to answer so well in the three Arctic expeditions in which I have served. The vessel is now in the hands of Messrs. Hall, Aberdeen, for the purpose of being fortified,bymeans of doubling, extra hold-beams, stringers, &c, to enable her to withstand ice-pressure; and upwards of 100 men are at work upon her. All Arctic men agree in pronouncing her to be the best adapted vessel ever selected for Arctic service. From her sharp midship section she will rise to ice-pressure, which would crush in the sides of a wall-sided vessel. Her speed, under steam, when deep, is expected to be six knots. She will carry five weeks' fuel for full speed, and two and a half years' provisions, being enough to last us for a second winter, should we unavoidably be detained. I believe I have nothing more to add, except to say that the volunteer offers of service from officers, seamen, and landsmen, are very numerous; and, as I have already) secured the very best of materiel, so I hope also to be fortunate with the personnel of the expedition."

The China Squadron.—Her Majesty's ships in the China waters, on April 25, were stationed as under. In Canton river:—Encounter and Elk, Macao Barrier; Acorn, Hamilton Creek; Hornet, Melgand Point; Niger. Blenheim Reach; Sibylle, Second Bar; Comui, Bogue; NankinaxiA Inflexible assisting the Raleigh; Calcutta, flag ship at Hong Kong. Steam tender Hong Kong, Sir Charles Forbes, and gunboat Starling, employed as occasion may require on the Canton River. Steam tender Coromandel actively conveying Sir Michael Seymour; Sampson and Camilla, about Amoy, seen the other day actively chasing pirates. Racehorse vegetating in the Min. Pique doing good service at Shanghae.

The Mediterranean Squadron.—The Squadron under the command of Admiral Lord Lyons, composed of the Royal Albert (flag ship), Brunswick, Conqueror and Centurion, screw steam ships of the line ; Curacoa, screw steam frigate; and the Ariel, steam corvette, accompanied by the schooner

yacht, Corutance, left Malta on the 4th of June for Tunis, Cagliari, Spezzia, and T oulon.

Charge Of Forgery Against A Naval Offices.—Thomas Moore Simeon, Mate in the Royal Navy, belonging to her Majesty's ship Cordelia, 11, screw, Commander Vernon, lying in Plymouth Sound, has been committed by the sitting magistrates at Devonport, to take his trial on a charge of uttering a forged Navy bill for 80 10s., knowing the same to he forged. The prisoner was brought up on remand. Mr. Elworthy addressed the bench in defence at some length, remarking, that he should show by the evidence of a number of gentlemen there had been some mistake on the part of the witnesses for the prosecution in the identity of his client. The bench committed the prisoner to take his trial at the next Devon Assizes, but consented to take bail of two sureties in £200 each, and the prisoner in £200 himself.

Naval Court-maRtial.—A Court-Martial assembled on board her Majesty's ship Victory, in Portsmouth Harbour, to try Mr. Thomas Wardner Wellington Spear, on tour charges. The first was for embezzling 25 pints of rum iu July, 1855. The second charge was, that the prisoner, when in actual service, and on full pay of the fleet, and paymaster of and in ber Majesty's ship Childers, was, on or about the 29th day of July, 1855, guilty of fraudulent conduct, unbecoming the character of an officer, in telling a wilful and deliberate falsehood to Commander Victor Grant Hickley, his commanding officer. The third charge was that of drunkenness, and the fourth imputed neglect of duty in not sending in the victualling accounts of the sloop Childers, from April, 1855, to April, 1856, and from the 1st day of October, 1856, to the date of his being superseded, and the clothing accounts of the said sloop for the whole period during which they were in his charge. Evidence having been heard in support of the charges, Mr. Hoskins addressed the Court in defence of the prisoner. The Court, after some deliberation, gave the following decision :—" That the first and second charges had not been proved, that the third charge had been proved, and the fourth charge partly proved: but, in consideration of the high character which the prisoner had previously borne in her Majesty's service, the Court only adjudged him to be placed at the bottom of the list of paymasters in the Navy, and there to remain."

Greenwich Officers' Half-pay.—In reply to a question from Admiral Sir George Pechell in the House on Monday,relative to the grant of half-pay to the captains, commanders, lieutenants, and masters in Greenwich Hospital. Mr. Wilson said the subject was one of great importance to the service, and required a very great deal of consideration. The rule, both in the army and navy, was, that whenever an officer took any civil employment his half-pay was suspended for the time being. There were, no doubt, exceptions to that rule, and the Governor and Deputy-Governor of Greenwich Hospital were exceptions to the rule; but it was to be borne in mind that greater responsibility attached to the Governor and Deputy Governor than to the officers in question. It was true that the military officers of Chelsea Hospital drew their half-pay as well as their salaries, but the salaries of the officers of Greenwich Hospital were much larger than those of the corresponding officers of Chelsea Hospital. The salary of the four captains of Greenwich was £400 a-year; their total present emoluments were £620, and their half-pay, if granted, would be £264 in addition. The salary of the four commanders was £300, and of the ten lieutenants and masters £230, but their total present emoluments, independent of half-pay, were £503 and £398, respectively. With regard to the officers at Chelsea, the salary of the major was £350, and of the adjutant £200; while the salary of the three captains and the three lieutenants was only £63, against tbe £230 received by the lieutenants and masters at Greenwich; so that if the half-pay of the Chelsea officers were added to their salary, their whole emoluments would not be found to amount to so much as the civil pay, without the half-pay, of the officers of Greenwich Hospital. The government were of opinion that to make an exception in the case of these officers would be to open a wide door to similar applications, and they were, therefore, not prepared to make so great an exception to the general rule.

Great Cibcle Sailing.—Mr. Towson, the examiner and secretary to the local marine board at Liverpool, has been presented with a testimonial of 1000 guineas (invested in one of the dock bonds), together with about £100 in cash, as a reward for his services with regard to the application of great circle sailing to long voyages, and the consequent shortening of Australian voyages in particular by about two months. The testimonial was subscribed to by all the leading Australian merchants, and a number of the principal general merchants, of the town.

Pkeservation Of Life From Shipwreck.—A meeting of the Royal National Life Boat Institution was held at its house, John-street, Adelphi, on the 4th June, the Duke of Northumberland, K.G., President of the Society, in the chair. Captain Washington, R.N., Hydographer of the Admiralty, Admiral Cato, Sir S. Herbert, K.C.B., T. Chapman, Esq., and many other gentlemen were also present. Mr. Lewis, the secretary, having read the minutes of the previous meeting, the silver medal of the institution was presented to Mr. Peter Corbet, pilot, iu testimony of the intrepid and skilful manner with which he piloted, during a heavy gale of wind, Her Majesty's revenue cruiser Eagle amongst the Totnez rocks, on the Guernsey coast, on the 5th Jan. last, thereby enabling the Eagle's boat to rescue three of the crew of the barque Boadicea, of Shields, which was wrecked on those rocks on that day. That and the crews of two other boats had received from the institution silver medals and pecuniary rewards for their brave services on the occasion. A reward of 6 was also granted to the crew of the life-boat of the institution stationed at Thorpeness, Suffolk, for their laudable services in putting off in the life-boat, and rescuing three men from a fishing-boat, which was observed to be in great danger off Sizewell bank on the 9th May. It was stated that the life-boats of the institution had, during the past few months, rescued, on different parts of the coast, upwards of eighty shipwrecked persons from a watery grave. A reward of j£30 was likewise granted to the crew of a Lowestoft yawl for putting off in her from the shore, and rescuing, at much risk of life, the crew of fourteen hands of the barque Morgiana, of Sunderland, which, during an easterly gale, was observed at two o'clock in the morning of the 10th May, Oh the Holm Sand. The master of the barque stated that be bad lost his vessel by the defective state of his compass. The silver medal and £2 were also presented to John Aiken, coast-guardman at Cusbendall, Antrim, in testimony of his gallant conduct in rushinir into the surf, and rescuing at the peril of his life a man who had fallen off Red Bay Pier. Aiken, from the dragging he received in the performance of his noble act, got his arm dislocated and his hand severely hurt. A reward of £6 was also granted to two men in acknowledgment of their services in rescuing, at the imminent peril of their lives, one out of four men whose fishing-boat had, during a terrific gale, sunk in Kenmare Bay. During the past month the institution had sent new life-boats to Seaton Carew, Stockton, Penmon, Anglesea, Braunton Sands, near Bideford, and to Arklow, on the Irish coast The cost of the Seaton boat was the gift of a generou* donor named Wm. McKerrell, Esq.,to the institution, and the trial of the life-boat on her station was said to he of the most satisfactory character. The benevolent gentleman will have the satisfaction to feel, in the event of the Seaton Carew life-boat saving hereafter the lives of any poor shipwrecked sailors, that the same had been the result of his individual gift to the society. An ingenious spirit-compass binnacle life-boat lantern was exhibited at the meeting, which Mr. Dent, of the Strand, had prepared at the request of the institution. It was much admired, and a somewhat similar one will be supplied to all the life-boats of the society. Thomas Chapman, Esq., F. U.S., deputy chairman of the society. Captain Washington, R.N., Hydographer of the Admiralty, and Edward Hurry, Esq., having been elected vice-presidents of the society, the proceedings closed.
