LTHOUGH the interval of our separation has to me appeared a long one, while it was transpiring, now that it is over and we meet again, it only seems like the other day that I was standing here before. It was amidst April showers that I made my bow; and though it is under November fogs that we once more assemble, I trust we may say with none the less emphasis, "well met." Whether we are well met or no depends entirely upon our fidelity to the great objects which have always been the loadstones to draw us together on these Sunday afternoons. It depends upon the steadfastness of our adherence to those principles of social kindliness, mutual forbearance, temperance, self-government, and religion, which have heretofore been the professed burden of these addresses. If we are faithful to these, if we are true to them, not only in principle but in practice, it will signify but little how homely our appeals may be, or in what spirit they may be received by the fastidious, they are certain to effect the good of man, and we may humbly trust they will also promote the glory of God. |
