Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, is a Gothic novel and an early work of science fiction. The narrative, partially based on Giovanni Aldini s experiments on dead and (sometimes) living animals, was a warning against the growth in scientific experimentation. It has had a considerable influence across literature and popular culture and inspired many horror stories and films, including the classic 1931 movie version starring Boris Karloff as the monster. The movie versions of this novel differ greatly from the novel in telling the story only from the point of view of Victor Frankenstein and not his creation, and in changing its ending.
