CASE ON BEHALF OF RICHARD PLANTAGENET DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM AND CHANDOS ON HIS CLAIM TO THE DIGNITY OF LORD KINLOSS IN THE PEERAGE OF SCOTLAND. EDWARD BRUCE, the second Son of Edward Bruce of Blairhall and the elder Brother of Sir George Bruce of Carnock,* was Commendator or Possessor of the Temporalities of the Abbey of Kinloss in 1593, and was appointed a Lord of Session in 1597. On the 2nd of February 1601 King James the Sixth, by a Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland, erected the Temporalities of the dissolved Abbey of Kinloss into a Temporal Lordship, Barony and Regality called the Lordship and Barony of Kinloss, and granted them to Edward Bruce his Heirs and Assigns; and the King further gave and granted to the said Edward Bruce "and his Heirs and Assigns the Title, Rank, "Honour and State of a free Baron and Lord of his Parliament in all time coming, to be "called Lords of Kinloss, and that they should have free vote in all his Parliaments and "Conventions like and as freely as any other Lord of his Parliament within his Realm.”" Edward Lord Kinloss accompanied † King James to England in April 1603, and on the 17th of May in that year the Lords of the Privy Council in Scotland excused the absence of" My Lord of Kinloss" as a Lord of Session as he had attended his Majesty in his journey to England. By Letters Patent under the Great Seal of England, bearing date on the 14th of May 1603, the King made Edward Lord Kinloss, by the description of "Edward *Note 1.-Sir George Bruce of Carnock was the grandfather of Edward Bruce of Carnock, who was created on the 26th December 1647 Earl of Kincardine and Lord Bruce of Torry, to hold to him and his Heirs Male. Charles the Ninth Earl of Kincardine, descended from Robert Bruce of Broom Hall the third son of Sir George Bruce of Carnock and the Uncle of the first Earl of Kincardine, succeeded as Earl of Elgin in 1747. † Note 2.-King James succeeded to the Throne of England on the death of Queen Elizabeth on the 24th of March 1603 in the thirty-sixth year of his Reign as King of Scotland. His accession to the Throne of Scotland was dated from the year 1567. |
