We behold the guide of youth,
At the Sabbath-school.
4 May the dews of grace fill the hallowed place, And the sunshine never fail,
[grows, While each blooming rose, which in memory Shall a sweet perfume exhale; When we mingle here no more, But have met on Jordan's shore, We will talk of moments o'er, At the Sabbath-school.
E thank the Lord above, Who cares for children thus; And sends his people, out of love, To teach and pray for us.
2 We humbly join the prayers, As grateful children should; Unless we add our own to theirs, They cannot do us good.
3 Oh! make us all sincere,
And thankful to be taught; And careful, every word we hear To mind it as we ought.
4 We thank the Lord who shows His love and mercy thus;
And pray that he would smile on those Who teach and pray for us.
1 WITHIN these walls be peace,
Love through our borders found;
In all our little palaces
Prosperity abound.
2 God scorns not humble things: Here, though the proud despise, The children of the King of kings Are training for the skies.
Early Attendance at School.
HE clock has struck, I cannot stay, let me rise, and haste away;
I'll take my book, and leave my home, The hour of school at length is come. 2 I would be there when prayer begins, To seek the pardon of my sins; To ask the favour of the Lord, And pray to understand his word. 3 Oh! shall my teachers wait in vain, While my neglect must give them pain? No; let me rather strive to be First of their little family.
4 These Sabbath-days will soon be o'er, And I shall go to school no more; I would not then endure the pain Of having spent my time in vain.
OR a season called to part, Let us now ourselves commend To the gracious eye and heart Of our ever-present Friend.
2 Jesus, hear our humble prayer; Tender Shepherd of thy sheep; Let thy mercy and thy care All our souls in safety keep.
3 What we each have now been taught, Let our memories retain ; May we, if we live, be brought Here to meet in peace again.
4 Then, if thou instruction bless, Songs of praises shall be given; We'll our thankfulness express, Here on earth, and when in heaven.
Upon the Dismission of an incorrigible Scholar. 1 WOW dreadful to be turned away In anger from our place!
May we be careful every day, For fear of such disgrace.
2 What kind instructions we have had!
And 'tis a poor return, To be as idle, or as bad,
As those who never learn.
3 We hope that Jesus will forgive The one that's gone away;
And grant him time, that he may live To see his fault and pray.
4 We might have been in his disgrace, And given up to sin;
Without a school, or any place, To learn religion in.
Upon a hopeful Scholar taking leave of the School.
E offer, Lord, a humble prayer,
And thank thee for thy grace bestowed
In leading one beneath our care
Thus far in wisdom's pleasant road.
2 Still night and morning may he pray, Where'er his dwelling may be found; Still love thy word, and keep thy day, Though gay young sinners scoff around. 3 May Jesus be his constant friend, The Bible his support and stay; And may thy Spirit, Lord, descend, To bless and guide him day by day. 4 We need not supplicate for more; For if he find a friend in thee, Then bless'd in basket and in store, In soul and body, shall he be.
REAT God, with wonder and with praise On all thy works I look;
But still thy wisdom, power, and grace, Shine brightest in thy book.
2 The stars, that in their courses roll, Have much instruction given; But thy good word informs my soul How I may climb to heaven.
3 The fields provide me food, and show The goodness of the Lord; But fruits of life and glory grow In thy most holy word.
4 Lord, make me understand thy law, Show what my faults have been; And, from thy gospel, let me draw Pardon for all my sin.
5 Here would I learn how Christ hath died To save my soul from hell; Not all the books on earth beside Such heavenly wonders tell.
OW precious is the book divine, By inspiration given!
Bright as a lamp, its doctrines shine To guide our souls to heaven.
2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts In this dark vale of tears;
Life, light, and joy it still imparts, And quells our rising fears.
3 This lamp, through all the tedious night Of life, shall guide our way,
Till we behold the clearer light Of an eternal day.
OW shall the young secure their hearts And guard their lives from sin? Thy word the choicest rules imparts
To keep the conscience clean.
2 When once it enters to the mind, It spreads such light abroad, The meanest souls instruction find, And raise their thoughts to God. 3 'Tis like the sun, a heavenly light, That guides us all the day;
And through the dangers of the night, A lamp to lead our way.
4 Thy word is everlasting truth;
How pure is every page!
That holy book shall guide our youth, And well support our age.
