A fantastic read: I literally couldn't put it down. This book is surprisingly accessible for what would normally seem a dry subject. Once again the late Frank Barlow manages to strike a balance between historically informative and yet interesting to both a student of Anglo-Saxon England and the general reader. This book is a hidden gem amongst the dull, tedious and generally difficult peices of work on Edward the Confessor that I have read in my lifetime.
Needless to say, this huge chunk of paper and ink also helped me enormously in my studies. For those of you who are interested in the work of Barlow, may I recommend 'The Feudal Kingdom of England: 1042-1216'. Trust me, you won't regret it.
