PREFACE.

IN publishing "THE ROYAL NAVY LIST," with the purpose of recording the War and Meritorious Services of the Officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, also the dates of all Commissions, &c., together with Medals, Clasps, Honours, Decorations, and Rewards, the Editors believe that they are supplying a want long felt by the Naval Service and the public at large, and trust that their efforts to make the work complete will be supported by Officers sending them the necessary information.

The Editors claim the kind consideration of the Service at the commencement of their undertaking, the difficulty of which has prevented alterations of rank, and appointments to ships, being corrected to as late a date as they will be in future editions.

They are aware how inadequate is the short summary of many of the War Services, &c., but deficiency of information has proved their greatest drawback in this part of their work.

Many Officers have already forwarded a sketch of their services, to whom the Editors beg to return their thanks, while earnestly hoping that the issue of the First Number will induce others to do the same.

Information that was received too late for insertion in the proper place has been shewn in an Addenda, and, together with dates, will appear in the proper place next Quarter.

The Editors regret that they will be unable to continue to publish “THE ROYAL NAVY LIST" at 5s. 6d. The work has increased so rapidly since the price was first decided on, that it will be impossible to publish future editions under 10s. 6d. a copy.

Copies will be forwarded post free in Great Britain on receipt of Post-Office Orders.

All communications to be addressed to

The Editors,

"ROYAL NAVY LIST,"

Middle Row Place,
