15. MAINPRISE, W. B., landed with Naval Brigade at Eupatoria with the allied armies; served in the operations in the Black Sea in the "Megæra" (Crimean and Turkish Medals, Sebastopol Clasp); present in "Furious" during China wars, at captures of Canton and Peiho forts, and at the signing of the treaty of peace at Tien-sien (two China Medals, two Canton and two Taku Clasps).

LOVE, G., was serving in the Black Sea fleet of 1854 in the "Agamemnon" (flag); and present at the bombardment of Sebastopol, 17th October, in the Royal Albert " (flag) during the operations, 1855-56, including the expedition to Kertch and Yenikale, and capture of Kinburn (Crimean and Turkish Medal, Sebastopol Clasp). 45. PARKER, S. W., whilst serving on board the "Bittern,' was on many occasions in action with pirates, including the 18th and 19th August, 1855, when 16 junks were captured, and at Shepoo, in September, 1855, when a flotilla of 22 were taken and destroyed; was present at the operations in the Canton river, the action of Fatshan, 1st June, 1857; was one of the garrison of Macao fort for 10 months in 1857; present at the attack and capture of the forts on the Peiho, 20th May, 1858; and, as Paymaster of the " Nimrod," was slightly wounded in the attack on the forts in 1859 (China Medal, Fatshan and Taku Clasps, 1859).

48. THOMPSON, Alexander, served during the Kaffir war (Kaffir Medal); present in three actions with Chinese pirates at Bias Bay, &c., in 1819, and in many smaller actions with Malay and Borneo pirates; assisted at capture of several slavers while detached on boat service on West Coast of Africa; in "Banshee" during the Russian war; present at capture of Bomarsund and Aland Islands (Baltic Medal), and at fall of Sebastopol, Anapa, Kerteh, and Kinburn (Crimean and Turkish Medals, Sebastopol and Azoff Clasps).

53. PENFOLD, Fred., served in "Cyclops" and "Sealark" on West Coast of Africa from 1848-50: at capture of six slavers; served in the "Fox" throughout the Burmah war, 1851-52-53 (Burmalı Medal, Pegu Clasps); and in the "St. Jean d'Acre" in the Baltic and Black Sea from 1851 to close of Russian war (Crimean and Turkish Medals, Sebastopol Clasp); was Acting-Paymaster of "Cruizer" during the China war, 1858-59-60; present at the engagements at the Peiho forts during each of those years; also present at the attack on Nankin and Yanking during Lord Elgin's expedition up the Yang-tze-Kiang; specially commended by Senior Officer in the Upper Yangtze for services during that expedition; promoted and gazetted for services in China (China Medal, Taku Clasps for 1859-60).

2. SCHOMBERG, General, served with the Baltic expedition in 1855 (Medal), and commanded Marine Artillery of a Division of gunboats at the bombardment of Sveaborg (mentioned in despatches, and promoted to Brevet Major); commanded the R. M. Artillery with the Brigade in China in 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton river, was in command of the Mortar Battery at the bombardment of Canton, and present at the assault and capture (Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, Medal with Clasp); C.B.

3. BARNARD, Lieutenant-General, served in the Royal Navy in Syria in 1810-41, including the blockade of Alexandria (Turkish Medal, and Naval War Medal with one Clasp); served as Lieutenant R. M. Artillery on board H.M.S. "Firebrand" on the S.E. coast of America from 1844 to 1848; took part in the operations of the combined English and French Squadrons in the River Parana in 1816, including the action of Obligado, the landing, storming and capture of batteries; subsequent operations on the River Parana, concluding with the action at St. Lorenzo, on which occasion he constructed a masked battery (rocket battery) on an island 800 yards from the enemy's guns, remaining concealed for two days and nights, and materially aiding the passing of batteries at St. Lorenzo by menof-war with large convoy of 120 merchant vessels on the 25th May, 1846 (mentioned in despatches); served on shore with R.M. Battalion at Monte Video when besieged by General Oreb, performing the duty of Acting-Adjutant for 13 months; proceeded to China in 1859 to take charge of R. M. Artillery serving on shore, and was Senior Officer of the Corps in the rocket boats at the bombardment and capture of the Taku forts on the 21st August, 1860; served Senior Officer in command of R.M. Artillery and R. Marines on board the Gun-boat flotilla which proceeded up the River Peiho two days after the capture of the Taku forts and in advance of the Allied armies; took possession of the Tientsin forts and afterwards of the principal gate of that city, being placed in command of the same till relieved by a force sent forward by the army; appointed on 10th September, 1860, to the command and charge of the Siege Train flotilla; employed in transporting the Siege Train from the Taku forts to Tungchow, 16 miles from Pekin (services officially acknowledged); appointed to the Staff of the 2nd Division Royal Artillery on 4th October, 1860, and served during the advance on Pekin, and was Senior Officer of Royal Marines at its surrender (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, and C.B).

4. WILLIAMS, Major-General was severely wounded at Lagos, Western Africa, 26th December, 1851, in spiking the guns to protect H.M. steamer, "Teazer," then aground A.D.C. to the Queen, when Colonel.

5. MAWREY, Colonel, was in action with the forts of Bomarsund, 10th August, 1854; and he commanded the R.M. Artillery in the Battalion during the operations against and surrender of the forts (Medal).

6. Cox, Lieutenant-Colonel, was at the action with the batteries, and expulsion of the Russian garrison from Redoubt Kaleh, 19th May, 1854, and variously employed on that coast; was the Senior Officer of R.M. Artillery at the attack by the combined Fleets on the outer forts and works of Sebastopol on the 17th October, and employed in the blockading Force during the siege, until March, 1855 (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).

7. ANSELL, Lieutenant-Colonel, was at the bombardment of Odessa, 22nd April, and was made prisoner by the Russians when H.M. ship Tiger' was stranded and burnt, 12th May, 1854; served with the Baltic expedition in 1855, and in the flotilla of gun-boats during the bombardment of Sveaborg (Medal).

8. POORE, Lieutenant-Colonel, served with the R.M. Battalion in the operations against and surrender of the forts of Bomarsund, in August, 1854; also with the Baltic expedition in 1855, and in the flotilla of mortar-boats during the bombardment of Sveaborg (Medal).

9. BRYDGES, Lieutenant-Colonel, served with the Baltic expedition in 1854, and 1855, and commanded a mortar in the flotilla during the bombardment of Sveaborg (Medal); whilst serving in H.M. ship "Ocean," was landed in command of the Marines of the fleet on several occasions during the revolution in Japan in 1868, including the occupation of Kobé.

10. FESTING, Sir Francis, C.B., K.C.M.G., Colonel, served with the Baltic expedition in 1854 (Medal); commanded a Mortar in the flotilla employed against Sebastopol, from June, 1855, until its fall; and was also at the bombardment and surrender of Kinburn (Medal and Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honour, and Turkish Medal); served with the China expedition of 1857-59, as Adjutant of the Artillery, including the blockade of the Canton river, bombardment and storm of the city (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major); served throughout the Ashantee war of 1873-74; was selected to command the detachment of Marines sent to the Gold Coast, in May, 1873, to assist in repelling the Ashantee army at this time threatening Cape Coast and Elmina; commanded the forces in two engagements at Elmina, on the 13th June, 1873, in both of which the enemy was defeated; on the arrival of Sir Garnet Wolseley, was placed in command of the troops at Cape Coast and charged with the measures for the defence of the place; was taken upon Sir Garnet Wolseley's list of Special Service Officers, on the 20th October, and placed in command of the native camp at Dunquah and of the advanced posts; commanded the force at the engagements near Dunquah on the 27th October (slightly wounded) and 3rd November, in the latter of which he was severely wounded while rescuing Lieutenant Eardley-Wilmot, of the Royal Artillery, who had fallen mortally wounded; was afterwards placed in command of the camp at Prahsu. "The Queen was graciously pleased to command that Lieutenant-Colonel F. W. Festing be specially promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Army, for his distinguished services on the Gold Coast, dated 7th January, 1874" (frequently mentioned in despatches, K.C.M.G., C.B., Medal and Clasp).

11. WILLIAMS, C. S., Major, served with the Baltic expedition in 1855 (Medal); served with the China expedition of 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton river, bombardment, storm, and capture of the city; expedition to the North and attack on the forts at the Peiho (wounded); served in the north of China in 1860, and commanded a Company at Shanghaé during the attacks of the rebel army in August (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).

12. HALLIDAY, Major, served with the Baltic expedition in 1855, and in the flotilla of mortar-boats during the bombardment of Sveaborg (Medal).

13. SAVAGE, Major, served throughout the China war of 1856-59, including the bombardment of Canton, capture of the forts in the river, and was landed for the protection of the factories; blockade of the river, landing before, T

TUSON, Major, served in China in 1858-60, and commanded a detachment on an expedition against pirates from 26th August to 5th September, 1858 (mentioned in despatches), and was present at the capture and destruction of 100 junks and 236 guns; was also present at the attack on the Peiho forts on 25th June, 1859, the capture of the Peiho forts in 1860, and subsequent operations (Medal with Clasp).

17. FOTHERGILL, Captain, served with the expedition up the Gambia, including the storm and capture of the strongly stockaded town of Saba, on 21st February, and bombardment and destruction of the town of Porto Novo, near Lagos, on 25th April, 1861.

18. WELCH, Captain, was landed at Panama to assist in suppressing the rebellion, on 27th September, 1860. 19. OGLE, Captain, was landed from H.M.S. "Brisk" in command of a detachment of Royal Marines, for the protection of Cape Coast Castle during the mutiny of the Gold Coast Artillery, in October, 1862, and received a vote of thanks from the Colonial Government; served in China in H.M.S. "Rodney," from September, 1867, to september, 1869; commanded the R.M. Artillery of the Battalion of Royal Marines from the Squadron at the occupation of Yangchow, in November, 1868; served with the Battalion at the attack and capture of three walled villages, in January, 1869 (mentioned in despatches).
