THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF BANKING.

Since

Great alterations have been made in this Edition. the last was published Mr. MACLEOD was selected by the Royal Commissioners for the Digest of the Law to prepare the Digest of the Law of Bills of Exchange, Bank Notes, &c.

In delivering the Judgment of the Court of Exchequer Chamber in the case of Goodwin v. Robarts, the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE of ENGLAND said :

'We find it stated in a Law Tract by Mr. MACLEOD, entitled 'Specimen of a Digest of the Law of Bills of Exchange, printed, we believe, as a Report to the Government, but which, from its research and ability, deserves to be produced in a form calculated to insure a wider circulation, &c.'

Mr. MACLEOD has already anticipated the suggestion of the Lord Chief Justice. For in his Principles of Economical Philosophy, which, as will be seen below, has been adopted by M. MICHEL CHEVALIER as his text-book of Political Economy at the Collége de France, he has embodied the results of his Work on the Digest which were applicable to that subject; and in the present edition of the Theory and Practice of Banking he has embodied still further portions.

Adopted by M. MICHEL CHEVALIER at the Collége de France.

Second Edition, VOL. I. price 15s.; VOL. II. PART I. completing Pure Economics, price 12s.

VOL. II. PART II. Mixed Economics, in preparation.

THE PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICAL

PHILOSOPHY.

'Of all the Works on Political Economy printed within the last fifty years, none surpasses this in importance. You have advanced the science more than any one during the last half century by the severe and judicious analysis to which you have subjected all the fundamental ideas and definitions.

'As a proof of the conviction I have on the subject of the extent of the services you have rendered to Political Economy, I add that it is this book, the Principles of Economical Philosophy, which henceforth shall serve me as a guide in my teaching at the Collége de France. No other book can be compared to yours for the correction of philosophical errors.'

MICHEL CHEVALIER.

**These two Works of Mr. MACLEOD are the only books in the English language which give a complete exposition of the THEORY of CREDIT, which was fully developed in the PANDECTS OF JUSTINIAN, and has continued the Mercantile Law of all Europe, except England, for 1,300 years, which was always English Equity, and has now, by the Supreme Court of Judicature Act, become the LAW of England; together with a complete exposition of the great system of modern CREDIT and BANKING, which is merely the practical exemplification of the Principles of Credit contained in Roman Law.
