3. Condit. Ye muft break off your covenant of peace with your lufts and idols, and ceafe to rejoice in doing evil; can you have peace while ye rebel against your Soveraign? And therefore Chrift is called our peace and reconciliation, Epb, 2 13.to 17.

5. Condit, Ye muft lead a holy and religious life; for as the réfentment of a wicked vitious life, breaks our peace and banishes our joy, fo the reflection of a vertuous good life, creats us peace and mightilie Increases our joy; bence when a pious man takes a view of his diary, to examine his actions, and finds that advancement in grace and godliness hath the over-ballance, O what peace and ferenity of foul! O what exultations of joy! do readily follow upon this his observation, even fuch sweet experiences as he would not exchange for all the pleafares of the world. This is our rejoicing (faith the Apoftle, 2 Cor, 2, 12. The tefimony of our confciences, that in godly fincerity we have had our converfation in the world: See alfo Ifa. 32 17.

I. E have need of the Helmet of Salvation, a frock on the head if any thing deep, or a throft at the heart are the moft mortal wounds, fo that if the head and the heart be well fenced, there is not so great hazard of the reft of the body. Now I fay, this piece of Armour is for covering the head in the day of Battle, that neither Satans darts nor daggers may pick upon your Pates, and therefore it is called the Helmet of Salvation, Eph. 6. 17. as if it were falvation enough to keep the head fafe;now what this Helmet is, the Apoftle tells us, Theff.5. 8. and for an helmet the hope of falvation;fo that, finner, leaft thou be attacqued with the heavy blows of thine enemies, get on thy helmet of hope, trufting in the Lord, and thou shalt find this piece fo far proof, that none of thefe blows fhall hitt thee, or if perhaps they hitt thee, yet they fhall not hurt thee, becaufe of the prefent help of the God of thy hope, who will either ward them off, or break their force that they go not deep.

2. Ye have need of a Breaf plates as we faid before the bead & the heart are chiefly to be guarded, but of these two more principallie the heart; for a man may get fame cutts in the head which may be healed again, but a wound at the heart fcorns th help of Art,& is irrecoverable; hence it is wort

remark that i The 8, where there is but one fing piece ordered for the head, there are two appoint ed for the heart, put on the breaf. plate of faith an love, and for an helmet the hope of falvation, yea w may lay the fame Apoftle adds a third, Eph.6.14 having on the breafe plate of righteoufeefs. O Sirs, fe to guard your hearts well; fays the wifeman, keep your heart with all keeping, Prov. 4. 23. i. e. Y cannot keep it enough it is in fo great hazard, for i once Satan gain the trong hold of the heart, hehat fealed the caftle, he hath gained the city, he hat win the field.

3. Ye have need of the Girdle of Truth, that y may be well buckeled against the pernicious ene mies of truth, who are ready by the force of carna reafonings to impofe upon you darkness for light,& errour for truth, fo that if it were poffible they would deceive the very Ele&; therefore endeavou to have a clear scheme and fyfteme of the most ne ceffary fundamental truths of the Gospel digested in your minds, that ye may the more easily difcer contrare errours & the more folidly confate them and ye may also be able to give a reafon of the hop that is in you when clearly called thereunto,

4. Ye have need of the Sword of the Spirit,a wea pon fit and ufefull both for defence and offence, and which hath this advantage, is easily portable now what this is, the Apoftle explains, Eph. 6. 17. An the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, where by is recommended to us a due care to be well ver fed in the Scriptures, as an univerfal fortification a baint all evils occurrent; O what power is in the
