productive of their kind of any difco- noon arrived at Spithead the grand fleet, vered in Britain, and upon trial is thought under the command of the earl Howe, will be highly beneficial to the underta-admiral of the White, with the Union kers as well as to the proprieters of the Jack flying at the main. grounds.

Lord Howe was faluted by the MoCanada, and Arethufa. The St. George had not got her powder on board.

8. The new-conftructed gun-car-narch, riage is fpoken of by many officers of the navy as likely to be of the utmost utility in a fleet, as well as in fortifications, as it well enable the gunner to point the gun in a moment to the object he wishes, and that too at the inftant of firing, notwithstanding the enemy may be either upon the bow or quarter.

It is intended to apply to Parliament for power to erect a pier, to improve the bar, regulate the pilotage, make public fea-baths, docks, &c. at Swanfea, and to erect a light-house at the mouth of the harbour.

Hertford, Sept. 12. Early on Saturday morning a fire broke out in a barn belonging to Robert Macky, efq. of Mardon, near this town, which confumed the fame, with fome other buildings, and two large wheat ricks; in the whole, the produce of near one hundred

14. A wheel to pump ships without manual labour has lately been invented in the North; its property is, to be driven with great force by the way of the fhip when in the water; and it is applicable to every kind of pump, with out interruption to the prefent mode of working them; and it may be put to, or removed, in two minutes. Portfmouth, Sept. 14.

This day captain Montagu hoifted his flag on board the Hector, of 74 guns; as did captain W. C. Finch in the Warrior, of 74.

Spithead, Sept. 15. The moft part of our cruize has been confined to the latitudes of 18 and 50 N. longitude, two degrees and a half to the weftward of the Lizard, alternately standing in for, and making the ifland of Ufhant, on the French coaft, and the Lizard on our own, but more particularly anxious to keep a good look-out on the port of Breft, probably with a design to prevent any junction taking place between the fleets of the house of Bourbon: be the intention what it might, notwithstanding we fpread a great diftance with forty-nine fail of pendents, and frequently stood within a few leagues of Ufhant, we never defcried a fingle man of war of any nation whatever. A fignal indeed was made a few days ago from one of the fleet, for feeing two French line of battle fhips fteering for Breft, but it could not be clearly afcertained they were fuch; we rather supposed them Eaft-India

men.

Chatham, Sept. 15. According to the present exertions here, by the different artificers and workmen of this dockyard, there appears very little probabi lity of a peace; as our artificers are still employed, fome at the rate of double days, others at two days and a half, which induces the people to carry on work in their refpective occupations with great alacrity.

Yefterday morning orders were received for the Raifonable and Agamemnon, of 64 guns each, to be fitted for fea at this port; and thofe fhips which were ordered previously to those two are expediting with all poffible dif patch.

The Leviathan, of 74 guns, now upon the flip in this dock-yard, is haften

ing for fea-fervice, although the time of her being launched is not yet fixed upon.

Leaves, Sept. 20. On Monday last, about mid-day, an excife officer and a light dragoon, from Battel, on Hooe Common, fell in with feven fmugglers, and nine horfes laden, of which they took feven, and were escorting them to Battel; but at Ninfield Stocks they were overtaken by the fmugglers, who attempted to rescue their horfes and goods; and after a flying fkirmish, in which one of the smugglers had his horse fhot dead under him by the excife officer, they effected it, and having exchanged their dead horfe for the excifeman's living one, marched off in triumph. To prevent a purfuit, the fmugglers drove the dragoon's horfe about two miles before them; when, thinking themfelves fafe, they hired a man to take him back again.

On Thursday laft, the Falcon cutter, capt. Charles Newland, feized at fea 114 cafks of fpirits, four bales of lace, and half a ton of tea; the whole of which was afterwards fafely lodged in the custom-houfe at Chichefter.

Laft Saturday morning, a lionefs, two hyenas, and two remarkable fine oftriches, intended as a present to his Majefty, were exhibited under an awning on the deck of a veffel, in the road of Brighton, to a great number of perfons, who went off in boats for that purpofe. One of the oftriches is upwards of ten feet high, and the other little lefs. They are both in full and most beautiful phimage.

Malden Sept. 21. The prize cup and fuit of St. George's colours, were failed for on Saturday, from a boat ftationed between the Bradwell and Merfea fhores, to the buoy of the Eagle, and back again, the diftance is about fifteen leagues.

The first part of the race there was but little wind, but a smart breeze coming on afterwards, the contest was fharp, and afforded great entertainment to the different pleafure yachts, aud fpectators on the refpective fhores, &c.

The Pink, and John and Sally, both of Merfea, took the lead, and run it on their feveral tacks, fo equally, in point of fpeed, that it might have been difficult to have determined where the fuperiority lay, had not the latter carried

away her topmaft in a fquall, within half a mile of coming in.

A boy, lately belonging to the Prince man of war, stole from a trunk on board the said ship, whilft she was at Plymouth, 230 guineas belonging to an officer. He arrived at Portsmouth in a paffage-veffel on Thursday laft, and gave a boy a guinea to put him on fhore. He was foon after apprehended, and 128 guineas were found upon him. He is committed for further examinination, and is only thirteen years of age.

Yesterday the remains of David Rofs, efq. were interred in the paved department of St. James's church-yard. A great many of his friends were in the country, and the funeral was very private. The fervice was performed partly in St. James's church, partly at the grave, James Bofwell, efq. attended as chief mourner, and with a felect few decently paid the laft honours to a man, with whom they had passed many a pleafant hour.
