Types of the Death of Chrift. Where the ashes are poured out: Heb. At the pouring out of the ashes.

13. And if the whole congregation of Ifrael fin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the affembly, and they bave done fomewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD, concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty:

14. When the fin which they have finned against it, is known, then the congregation fhall offer a young bul lock for the fin, and bring him before the tabernacle. of the congregation.

15. And the elders of the congregation fhall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD: and the bullock fhall be killed before the LORD.

18. And he shall put fome of the blood upon the horns of the altar, which is before the LORD, that is in the tabernacle of the congregation, and fhall pour out all the blood at the bottom of the altar of the burnt-offering, which at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

19. And he shall take all his fat from him, and burn it upon the altar.

20. And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the bullock for a fin-offering, so fhall be do with this : and the priest fhall make an atonement for them, and it fhall be forgiven them.

21. And be fhall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is fin-offering for the congregation.

22. When a ruler hath finned, and done fomewhat through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD his God, concerning things which should not be done, and is guilty;

29. And if any one of the common people fin through ignorance, while he doeth fomewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD, concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty;

29. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the Sin-offering, and pay the fin-offering in the place of the burnt-offering.

30. And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burntoffering, and fhall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar.

31. And he fhall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the facrifice of peaceofferings; and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, for a fweet favour unto the LORD: and the priest fhall make an atonement for him, and it fhall be forgiven him. 32. And if he bring a lamb for a fin-offering, he fhall bring it a female without blemish.

33. And he hall lay his band

and lay it for a fin-offering, in the place where they kill the burnt-offering.

34. And the priest shall take of the blood of the finoffering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar.

And he fhall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the facrifice of the peace-offerings: and the prieft fhall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD: and the priest shall make an atonoment for bis fin that he hath committed, and it fhall be forgiven him.

35. It shall be forgiven him: i. e. His Sin fhall not be imputed to him: But

is

then this forgiveness not the fruit of the Sacrifice barely confidered, but is an effect of God's mercy; and as the Sacrifice was a token of the Offerer's repentance,

as well as the Inftitution of God, and a Type of our Saviour's death; it was accepted by God, and procured pardon to the Offerer who had finned.

The ARGUMENT.

Of fuppreffing the Truth, touching an unclean thing, not performing an Oath. In thefe cafes the Tranfgreffor is to confefs his Sin, and bring his Offering either of the Flock, Fowls, or fine Flour. Of Sacrilege and other Sins through ignorance, and the Offering in thofe cafes.

1. THE voice of Swearing: Or rather the voice of adjuration. It was

the Cuftom among the Jews for the Judges and MagiItrates to adjure Men

were

that were before them, whether they were accufed, or Witneffes, to speak the truth. And this they were wont to do by the holy Name of God. And we have Examples of this folemn way of Adjuration in 1 Kings 22. 16. 2 Chron. 18. 15. Matt. 26. 63. He that in this cafe fuppreffed his Knowledge, contracted a guilt, and upon that account was obliged to bring his Offering, v.6. And Men were under a temptation to conceal their knowledge, where their revealing it would bring them into danger. Whofo is partner with a thief, hateth his own foul: he heareth curfing (or adjuration, it being the fame word, which is here rendred wearing) and bewrayeth it not, Prov. 29. 24. Bear bis iniquity: He shall be guilty, and liable to punifh
