There are twenty of Roslin's barons bold
Lie buried within that proud chapelle ;
Each one the holy vault doth hold—
But the sea holds lovely Rosabelle !

And each St Clair was buried there,

With candle, with book, and with knell ; But the sea-caves rung, and the wild winds sung, The dirge of lovely Rosabelle.

[blocks in formation]

If thou would'st view fair Melrose aright,

Go visit it by the pale moonlight;

For the gay beams of lightsome day,
Gild, but to flout, the ruins grey.

When the broken arches are black in night,
And each shafted oriel glimmers white;
When the cold light's uncertain shower

Streams on the ruin'd central tower;
When buttress and buttress, alternately,
Seem framed of ebon and ivory;

When silver edges the imagery,

And the scrolls that teach thee to live and die;

When distant Tweed is heard to rave,

And the owlet to hoot o'er the dead man's grave,

Then go but go alone the while—

Then view St David's ruin'd pile;
And, home returning, soothly swear,
Was never scene so sad and fair!

And maim'd our hope of combat, or of flight,
We hear her deep-mouth'd bay, announcing all
Of wrath and wo and punishment that bides us.

Antiquary.

Fortune, you say, flies from us- -She but circles,

Like the fleet sea-bird round the fowler's skiff-
Lost in the mist one moment, and the next
Brushing the white sail with her whiter wing,
As if to court the aim.-Experience watches,
And has her on the wheel.-

As, to the Autumn breeze's bugle sound,
Various and vague the dry leaves dance their round;
Or, from the garner-door, on ether borne,
The chaff flies devious from the winnow'd corn;
So vague, so devious, at the breath of heaven,
From their fix'd aim are mortal counsels driven.
Bride of Lammermoor.

Away! our journey lies through dell and dingle,
Where the blithe fawn trips by its timid mother,
