NORTHUMBERLAND.

A NORTHERN County, bounded on the

North by Berwickshire in Scotland; on the East by the German Ocean ; on the South by the county of Durham ; on the West by the counties of Roxburgh in Scotland, and by Cumberland. It is 62 miles in length, and about 42 in breadth. It is divided into six wards, Bamborough, Castle, Coquetdale, Glendale, Morpeth, and Tindale. The principal rivers, of this county are, the Tyne, the Blyth, the Wansbeck, the Coquet, the Alne, and the Tweed. The MARKET-TOWNS are, Allendale, Alnwick, Belford, Berwick, Bollingham, Coldstream, Corbridge, Hexhum, Haltwhistle, Morpeth, Newcastle, North Shields, Rothbury, Wooler. NorthUMBERLAND sends eight members to parliament; two for the County, two for Newcastle, two for Morpeth, and two for Berwick. It is in the Province OF YORK, in the DioceSE OF DURHAM, and in the NORTHERN Circuit. It contains 1871 square miles, or 1,197,440 acres; and 88 parisbes. It had 23 monastic establishments, and 15 public charities; it has 5 parishes with no churches ; 1 parish with less than 100 inhabitants ; 31 parishes with no parsonage-houses; 8 parishes with parsonage-houses unfit to live in ; the POOR-RATES were, in 1818, 99,3731. 38. 6 d.; the number of paupers 13,164; the rental of the county, according to a return made to the parliament in 1818, was 1,240,5941. 98. 7d.; the population, according to a return laid before parliament in 1821, was 198,965 ; the number of inhabited houses in 1821 was, 31,526; the number of uninhabited houses at the same epoch, 1,166 ; the poor-rates bear the proportion of one-twelfth of the rental; the number of paupers compared with the number of houses, is one to every two; the poor-rates in 1776, were 14,085 ; the number of persons to every square mile of this county, is 106; the number of acres to a person, 6; the number of acres to a house, 36; the male population in 1821, was 95,354 ; the families employed in agriculture were in number

11,566; the families employed in handicraft were 20,560 in number ;- the number of other families was 10,996. The agricultural male population 25,577; oble labourers 12,788; the number of acres in this county to every able-bodied labourer is 93. The appearance of this county is as various as possible, being a continued dead fiat all along the sea coast, from Tynemouth to Berwick; then, at a distance from the sea, rising in gentle swells, and, in tbe whole of the Western side of it, from Wooler to Allendale, being decidedly mountainous. By drawing a line from Berwick to Hexbam, and then again from Hexham to North Shields, you have on the East, the fertile and well-cultivated low-land district; and all on the West of this is a mountainous district, in great part barren. The soil of both these districts is nevertheless very various. That on the Eastern part of the county bas some barren heaths, some sandy, and some clayey spots; the valley of Hexham being considered its richest part. In the mountainous district, though the characteristic is bleakness and want of fertility, yet this is not altogether unaccompanied by.spots of considerable fertility. The Cheviot bills, for instance, a district extending from Wooler for some miles in a southerly direction, are celebrated for the excellence of their pasturage. The rotation of crops in the Eastern part of the county is, turnips, barley, or wheat ; clover for two years ; oats. This is varied according as the land is strong or light. In the Western district, three years' tillage, and then three years' grass, is a very common mode of cropping. The cattle mostly us-d in Northumberland are a shorthorned breed called the Dutch. The sheep are of three breeds, the Dishley, or long-wooled, in the low-land districts; the Cheviot, on the hills of Cheviot, and the Heath breed, peculiarly adapted to the more barren of the moun. tains. There are extensive lead-mines in the neighbuurhood of Allendale, Shielden, Fallowfield, and Little-Houghton ; but the great article of commerce

of the county, is in that of coals. The and linen and woollen cloth ; 1st Tuesdistrict of this county that is most fertile day in Oct., horned cattle, horses, in coal, is that extending along the sea and pedlary ; Oct. 28, cattle ; Saturcoast from North Shields to the mouth day before Christmas-day, shoes, hats, of the Aln (near to Alnwick), and taking poultry, and woollen cloth. (Aug. in some miles from the coast all the way, 1, Guild. Here there was a Premon. but getting broader as you approach stratensian Abbey, founded in the year North Shields. The extent of the coal 1147, by Eustace Fitz-Jobn; valne fields is estimated at 300 acres; and 1941. 7s. yearly, now worth 58876.; the quantity of coal shipped to London granted, 4 Edx. VI., to Ralph Sadler from Newcastle was, in 1700, estimated and Laurence Winnington. at 300,000 chaldrons annually. The AMBLE, in Warkworth parish, and poprincipal manufacture of Northumber.
