The district of this county that is most fertile in coal, is that extending along the sea coast from North Shields to the mouth of the Aln (near to Alnwick), and taking in some miles from the coast all the way, but getting broader as you approach North Shields. The extent of the coal fields is estimated at 300 acres; and the quantity of coal shipped to London from Newcastle was, in 1700, estimated at 300,000 chaldrons annually. The principal manufacture of Northumberland is of glass-ware, which is carried on to a great extent on the Tyne, there being no fewer than eight-and-twenty glass-works on that river, and at no great distance from its mouth.
