CHESHIRE.

THIS county is bounded on the North by Lancashire, on the East and South-east by Derbyshire and Staffordshire, on the South by Shropshire and part of Flintshire, and on the West and North-west by Denbighshire and part of Flintshire. About 58 miles long, and 40 broad. It is divided into seven hundreds; namely, Broxton, Bucklow, Eddisbury, Macclesfield, Nantwich, Northwich, and Wirrall. Its principal RIVERS are, the Dee, the Weever, and the Mersey. It has 13 MARKET-TOWNS, Altringham, Congleton, Knutsford, Macclesfield, Malpas, Middlewich, Nantwich, Northwich,

Sandbach, Stockport, Chester, Tarporley, and Neston. It returns 2 members to Parliament for the shire, and 2 for the city of Chester. This county contains 1052 square miles, or 673,280 acres, and 90 parishes. It had 16 monastic establishments, and 35 public charities; it has 2 parishes with no churches, 6 parishes with less than 100 people, 47 parishes with no parsonage-house, 11 parishes with parsonage-house unfit to live in. The poor-rates were in 1818 164,7371. 15s. 34d.; the number of pauthe rental of the county, pers, 19,244; according to a return made to Parliament

in 1818, was 1,083,0831. 12s. 3d.; the
population, according to a return laid
before Parliament in 1821, was 270,098;
the number of inhabited houses in
1821, was 47,094; the number of unin-
habited houses at the same epoch, 1,212;
the poor-rates bear the proportion of one-
sixth of the rental; the number of pau-
pers, compared with the number of
houses, is 1 to every 3 houses; the
poor-rates, in 1776, were 28,9221.; the
number of persons to every square mile
of this county is 257; the number of
acres to a person, 2; the number of
acres to a house, 14; the male popu-
lation in 1821 was 132,952; the families
employed in agriculture were 18,120 in
number;
the families employed in han-
dicraft were 27,105 in number; the
number of other families was 6,709;
the agricultural male population, 46,307;
able labourers, 23,153. The number of
acres in this county to every able-

bodied labourer is 24. It is in the PRO
VINCE OF YORK, and in the DIOCESE OF
CHESTER, and is in the NORTH-WALES
CIRCUIT. It has been called the Vale

Royal of England, said to be from the
circumstance of the famous Abbey of
Vale Royal, situate nearly in the centre
of the county, rather than from the su-
periority of its beauty or richness. The
surface of it is generally flat, there
being not much uneven ground, ex-
cepting the high hills in the eastern
parts of it. The land is, for the most
part, a rich, stiff mould, or even clay,
in many parts, with a mixture of red
grit-rock and moor-peat. There are but
few woods of any extent; the whole
country being arable and pasture, and
full as much (if not more) of the latter
than the former. Besides the rivers
above enumerated, it has the advantage
of being very much intersected by
canals. Its produce is CHEESE, for which
it is famous all the world over, and
which is produced principally in the
neighbourhoods of the towns of Nant-
wich, Congleton, and Middlewich, and
the parish of Over, and along the banks
of the Weever; SALT is produced in
great quantity at Northwich; and the
manufacture of silk, muslin, and calico,
is carried on to a great extent in the
towns and neighbourhoods of Maccles-
field, Stockport, Knutsford, Sandbach,
Nantwich, and Thelwall.
