IV. c. in the last session of parliament, intituled 'An Act to continue for Five 64, the time for Years, from the Fifth Day of April, One thousand eight hundred and intention to comthirty-five, and to amend the Acts for authorizing a Composition for As- pound for assessed Taxes,' persons who had compounded for certain of the duties of sessed taxes, enlarged until the assessed taxes under the acts therein referred to were authorized to 1st October, 1835. continue their former compositions for a further term, and persons who had not so compounded were authorized to compound for the same duties for the term and in the manner and on the conditions in the said act mentioned or referred to, provided that such persons respectively should give notice of their intention so to continue their former compositions or to compound on or before the fifth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-five, in England, and on or before the term of Whitsunday in the same year in Scotland, in the manner in the said act prescribed; and it is expedient to enlarge the periods for compounding under the said act;" be it therefore enacted, "That the several periods limited by the said last-recited act for giving any such notice as aforesaid in England and Scotland respectively shall be and the same are hereby extended

Compositions extended.

until the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and thirty five, inclusive; and the respective surveyors to whom such notices have been or shall be delivered within the period limited by this act shall dil gently inquire into and examine such notices, and certify their assent of objection thereto at any time within one calendar month next after the delivery thereof respectively, or at the furthest within one calenda month next after the said first day of October; and the respective com missioners acting in the execution of the said acts are hereby authorize and required to enter into composition with such persons respectivel who have given or shall within the period limited by this act give suc notices as aforesaid, subject to the rules, regulations, and according the provisions of the said recited act, in like manner as if such notice had been delivered within the time limited by the said recited act, pro vided the contracts of such compositions respectively shall be execute by the said commissioners and the party compounding on or before th first day of December, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-five; an which contracts of compositions when executed by the said commissioners or any two or more of them, and by the party aforesaid, in the manner b the said recited act directed, shall be of the like force and effect, and sub ject to the like powers and conditions for payment, to all intents as if th said compositions had been entered into under the directions of the sai recited act: provided always, that upon every contract of compositio executed as aforesaid after the first day of October, one thousand eigh hundred and thirty-five, there shall be paid one moiety of the annua amount payable under the same within ten days next after the date such contract."

The 2 & 3 Vict. c. 35, s. 1, extended compositions for assessed taxe under 4 & 5 Will. IV. c. 54, for the further term of one year ending the 5th of April, 1841. Sect. 2, except in cases where parties have giver notice to determine same on 5th of April, 1840.

By 3 Vict. c. 38, s. 1, compositions under the two last mentioned act were further extended for one year ending 5th of April, 1842. Sect. 2 except in cases where parties may have given notice to determine on 5t of April, 1841.

By 4 & 5 Vict. c. 26, s. 1, compositions for assessed taxes were con tinued for a further term of one year ending the 5th of April, 1843, excep in cases where parties shall give notice to determine same on the 5th o April, 1842. Sect. 2, such notice to be given on or before the 10th o October, 1842.

Thames.

As to rivers in general, see " Rivers and Navigation,” Vol. V.

Concerning regulations of the navigation on the river of Thames, the same not being general, it will be sufficient only to mention the several acts touching the same, viz.:

The 7 & 8 Geo. IV. c. lxxv. is so important in its nature, and concerns

so large a portion of the magistracy and the public, that it is thought fit

here to insert it.

By that act, intituled "An Act for the better Regulation of the Water- 7 & 8 Geo. IV. men and Lightermen on the River Thames, between Yantlet Creek and o. lxxv.

Windsor," reciting, "Whereas an act was made in the sixth year of the 6 Hen. VIII. c. 7. reign of king Henry the Eighth, for regulating the several sums that watermen on the river of Thames should take for their fare from one place to another near to the city of London: and whereas an act was made in the second and third years of the reign of king Philip and

queen Mary, intituled 'An Act touching Watermen and Bargemen upon 2 & 3 P. & M. the River of Thames; and thereby the mayor and the court of aldermen of c. 16. the city of London were empowered to elect yearly eight watermen to be the overseers and rulers of all the wherrymen and watermen upon the said river of Thames between Gravesend and Windsor, who should allow of or admit and register such watermen as therein is mentioned; and the said mayor and court of aldermen were directed from time to time, at their discretion, to set and assess the prices and sums of money that every person authorized to row by the said overseers and rulers, betwixt Gravesend and Windsor, should take for his labour or fare from place to place : and whereas an act was made in the first year of the reign of king James

the First, intituled An Act concerning Wherrymen and Watermen:' 1 Jac. I. c. 16. and whereas an act was made in the eleventh and twelfth years of the

reign of king William the Third, intituled An Act for the Explana- 11 & 12 Will. III. tion and better Execution of former Acts made touching Watermen and c. 21. Wherrymen rowing on the River of Thames; and for the better ordering and governing the said Watermen, Wherrymen, and Lightermen upon the said River between Gravesend and Windsor;' and thereby wherrymen, watermen, and lightermen, working between Gravesend and Windsor, were constituted one company, and the said lightermen were directed to be registered; and the court of lord mayor and aldermen of the city of London were empowered to elect yearly eight watermen, and also three Lightermen out of twelve to be nominated by the lightermen, to be overseers and rulers of the wherrymen, watermen, and lightermen; and the said overseers and rulers were required to appoint such assistants, and present to the court of mayor and aldermen such auditors, as therein is mentioned; and the said rulers, auditors, and assistants were empowered to make rules, orders, and constitutions for maintaining good order and obedience amongst the company, to be altered or approved by the said court of mayor and aldermen, and afterwards confirmed or altered by the lord chief justice of either bench: and whereas an act was made in the fourth year of the reign of queen Anne, intituled 'An Act for the better 4 Anne, c. 13. ordering and governing the Watermen and Lightermen upon the River of Thames; and whereas an act was made in the second year of the reign

of king George the Second, intituled 'An Act for making more effectual 2 Geo. II. c. 26. several Acts passed relating to Watermen, Wherrymen, and Lightermen rowing on the River Thames; and for better ordering and governing such Watermen, Wherrymen, and Lightermen :' and whereas an act was made in the fourth year of the reign of his said majesty king George the
