Retir'd within their leader's private room,
Plung❜d in debate-but deeper plung'd in gloom,
A conclave of illustrious Whigs were met.
Aid me, kind Phoebus! while I paint the set.
Cr-t-n was there, with looks sedate and bland,
And aged C-k, stern captain of the band;
Profound M-ff, whose head, if split, would shew
A Bibliotheca Juris, row on row;

And little J-ff. whose brilliant critic reign-
The truth cannot be hid-is on the wane;

And smooth-tongu'd M―y, in whose velvet paw,
Even when he pats and smiles, there lurks the claw;
Sk-n and B-n, those twin stars that run,
In legal dance, round G-b-n's golden sun,
Enter'd together-and, beside this pair,
Like nightly wolf, new risen from his lair,
Mac-ch dark! in contrast strange near him,
Fam'd for gay wit, wild whiggery, and whim,
Came F-11-n; beside him in the van,
Sat keen-ey'd C-k-n, and that florid man,
Well try'd in parts of multifarious sort,
Laird, statesman, lawyer,-J. P. G―t in short.

Such were the principals !—but who shall name
The lesser whigs that to the summons came?
Rich whigs were there who dine off plate and crystal,
Poor whigs, who for a dinner may go whistle-
Fat whigs, whose noses gilded well with wine,
Like Bardolph's fam'd proboscis swell and shine ;-
Lean briefless whigs, with lank unwashen faces,
Spruce buckskin'd whigs, that swagger in their paces,

Whigs from the immaculate precincts of the Bow, ~
From odorous Cowgate and fam'd Potterrow,
Yet of whose entity one scarce aware is-
Decaying bakers, starv'd apothecaries,
Grim patriot cobblers, that denounce abuses,
And tailors hot and heavy as their gooses,
Flock'd in Mac-ch's train, and squatted down
Beside-the future lawyers of the Crown.
Such was the convocation, fairly reckon'd,
Their speeches may be given in Part the Second.

THE SOLICITOR'S GOWN,

OR, OH! THE TOGA!

(IMITATED FROM THE IRISH MELODIES).*

AB Alley Croker."

I.

THROUGH EDIN'S town,

To spout anon,

As GR-NT and C-KB-N rambled,

With PUCK, the sprite,
Whose fancy bright

In thoughts of Office gambol'd ;

Where'er they go,

In vivid shew,

There floats with long sleeves streaming,

A silken gown

Of great renown,

And black as jet beads beaming,

Oh! the Toga, the dear delightful Toga! Charming dress

Of old Dundas,

SOLICITOR'S Silk Toga!
