“Hoy! hoy! get out of the way!” Stop him, stop him!” “Look out, mind yourself!” Catch his head, hold him!” “Hillo !” Such were the cries that rang through the street, as a frightened horse dashed down. the hill towards the bridge, dragging after it a small empty gig. The owner of the equipage, a little fat man: in a large top coat, appeared in the distance, puffing, and running, and trying to shout. He had gone into a shop to make some purchases, and one of the shop boys had been set to mind his horse. But the boy had not attended, a cart jingling by frightened the animal, just as he set off the lad ran to stop him, and frightened him more, and down the street he rattled, with the reins dangling about his heels, and the gig shaking and jolting behind, as if it would come to pieces. People rushed to their doors, timid ladies took refuge in the nearest shop, little boys shouted with delight at
