16 Transcendent power redeems from hell
Our sinful mortal race;

His boundless mercies who can tell,
That pities thus our case?

17 Shine on me, Lord, with thy dear face, Thou everlasting God;

And day-spring from on high with peace
Shine on from thine abode.

18 Turn thy countenance upon me,
O thou Emanuel,

That I may hope thy face to see
In heaven, where thou dost dwell.

PSALM LXXXVII.

1 THE temple of God's holiness
In Sion's mount is set;
In Sion's gates is blessedness,
Where God is veil'd in state.

2 O! holy city of the Lord,

Great things are spoke of thee,
Where purest joys there spread abroad
Eternally we'll see.

3 Behold, all saints the Lord hath known, He will their names record;

In Book of Life it shall be shown
Such people him adored.

4 Then of his saints, it shall be said, All merit they renounced;

Acceptance found thro' Christ their head
At Sion's gate pronounced.

5 Therefore applause shall wait them there,
Where God will them reward;
Delights unmingled they will share
In heaven with kind regard.

6 O! then walk on in wisdom's ways,
In them is sweet content;

So in God's courts to sound his praise
At last you'll fix your tent.

PSALM LXXXVIII.

1 MESSIAH, God's anointed Son,
And Saviour of mankind,
The Mediator of each one,
Thy Spirit to us send.

2 By night and day to thee I cry,
Unto my prayer give ear;
"But before thee, great God most high,
O how shall I appear!"

3 For seas of trouble fill my soul

When death's cold grave I'm near;

Misfortunes dire upon me roll,

And mournful days I fear.

4 Like one whose hopes quite blasted are Beneath thy chastening rod,

And banished from remembrance far,
From presence of great God.

5 Cast off I am by wealthy friends
Down almost to despair;

Shut up, none comfort to me sends,
Nor kind unto me are.
6 I mourning in affliction go,
And in retirement sigh;

For no kind heart will e'er bestow
On me a friendly eye.

7 In solitude my weeping eyes
Pour down with bitter tears;
My daily prayers to God arise
Through life's successive years.

8 O! then revive my drooping heart
With comfort from above;

Thy wondrous aid, O Lord, impart,
To cheer me by thy love.

9 Can the still grave thy love confess
When death in darkness rests ?
Can it relate God's uprightness
When it the soul invests ?

10 From sunrising until it set
Below the hills at night,
O let us not thy praise forget,
Or wonders of thy might.

11 Lord, why hast thou cast off my soul?
Why from me hide thy face?
From youth distress does me control,
Consider, Lord, my case.

12 My lovers and acquaintance are
Now far removed from me;

The world renounce, and it declare
I will for sake of thee.

13 Then, O dear Jesus, on me look
With sympathy and love;
When God I for my portion took,
To him I'll zealous prove.

PSALM LXXXIX.

1 THE mercies of my God I'll sing,
And with my tongue declare;
To him immortal glory bring,
For great his mercies are.
2 His goodness loud I will proclaim,
Whose faithfulness endures;

For everlastingly the same,

And favour it procures.

3 God with his chosen seed hath made

A covenant most sure,

And thus his solemn oath conveyed
To us he will secure.

4 That safe his people shall remain Through endless ages all

1;

And his elect ones will maintain,

That on his name do call.

5 Then praise God's wondrous truth and love,

Ye humble saints on earth,

While throngs of angels sing above
Glad songs of heavenly birth.
6 O! what seraphic being on high
Can with the Lord compare?

No earthly power can with him vie,
For dust
poor mortals are.

7 Most sacred awe to God is due

Here in his church below:

Holy fear should proud hearts subdue
When to Christ's school they go.

́8 O Lord of hosts, what strength or might Can boast an arm like thine?

The mighty Lord shines dazzling bright
In glory all divine.

9 His hands the raging sea control,
And o'er the waves does reign;
So when the swelling billows roll,
He calms them all again.

10 The pride of man thou humble shall
With thine almighty arm;
