Like as a watch at night may be
In sight of us to stay.

5 By death thou sweepest man away,
He like a dream does pass;
Cut down, alas! fast to decay,
Short-lived as is the grass.

6 Man's youthful beauty fresh does seem,
As it would ne'er decay;
Yet him to death the Lord supreme
Hath doom'd to call away.

7 Our secret sins before his face
Are full to view display'd;
From his glorious dwelling-place
His anger's sharp array'd.

8 Unheeded years, that slide quick by,
Of which we take no note,

Are register'd by the Most High,
With every sinful thought.

9 Man's life is seventy short years;
But if God lend us strength,
Some here at eighty still appears,
Bless'd both with life and health.

10 But yet decay our strength then must, In sickness and in pain,

And soon in grave be turn'd to dust,
And there God's time remain.

11 O Lord! teach us to bow with awe
To thee, who wonders wrought;

For us, who broke thy holy law, Redemption thou hast sought. 12 O! to the Saviour now apply,

In truth with heart and soul,
That we our days may count thereby,
And wisdom us control.
13 O Lord! return again to us,
Nor longer from us stay;
Our hope is fixt in Christ Jesus,
Our prop and door alway.

14 My heart o'erwhelmed is within
When sore rebuked by thee;
But I repent me of my sin,
And to thy mercy flee.

15 Lord, let thy tender mercies cheer
My drooping soul thereby,

That joy and gladness now appear,
My soul to satisfy.

16 Let days of happiness combine
To end our years complete,

And annual charities so shine
With light that's truly meet.

17 So let thy people's deeds appear
Sweet proofs of thy kind grace,
That faith by works do shine out clear
Before thy gracious face,

18 So that the beauty of the Lord

Shine in Jesusalem;

By all his handiworks adored,
O'er all his works supreme.

19 O Lord! establish wisdom's ways
In the frail heart of man ;

How sweet, when saints and angels raise
Their grateful praise in one!

PSALM XCI.

1 THE Lord's the guardian of the just,
Who in his strength confide;
They who repose on him with trust
Secure with him abide.

2 Under the shelter of his wing
Their soul shall rest in peace;
The Lord Almighty is our King,
Heaven his dwelling-place.

3 Assuredly his tenderness

Us from disease does save; Under his wings lies blessedness When snatch'd back from the

If we on God depend;

grave.

His shield and buckler o'er our head,
Through life shall us defend.

5 Undaunted courage he will give,
When plague and famine come;

In secret bliss they on shall live,
Until death's final doom.

6 Immortal glory then await
The servants of the Lord;

For Jesus Christ is door and gate,
Direction will afford.

7 Ten thousand at thy side may fall,
Yet death to thee not nigh;

Yet in God's time he will thee call From his bright throne on high. 8 Because my God most constantly My guardian has been ;

In peace

I on his power rely,

Who my distress has seen.

9 No ill shall on thy dwelling light,
His angel charge shall have

To keep thee safe both day and night,
And thee from harm will save.

10 Angelic help his saints support,
Close watching by his side,

To lend them some unseen comfort,
Lest any ill betide.

11 When some great stone would dash thy foot,

It shall be borne away;

On thee no roaring lion shall put

His feet, or near thee stay.

12 Serpents nor dragons shall not fright,
Or suddenly surprise;

Nor robbers come to steal at night,
In their foul black disguise ;

13 Because ye honour'd God's great name, And in your heart loved him,

And made Christ's merits all your
To his favour and esteem.

14 From trouble he will set thee high,
And give both wealth and pow'r,
And with his skill will thee supply
Through every trying hour.

15 As Christ a pattern thou didst make,
When on thy pilgrimage,

God will accept thee for his sake,
When call'd from off life's stage.
16 In health he will thee satisfy,
And make his promise sure;
Then on his providence rely,
Whose Gospel does secure.

PSALM XCII.

1 To render thanks to God on high
Is a most delightful thing,
And his great name to glorify,
And hallelujahs sing.
