7 Jesus will weary souls uphold When straits do here oppress, Conducting them into his fold,

[ocr errors]

Free from their sore distress.

8 In slippery paths their feet he'll free,
And guide them safely on,
The city of our God to see
Through his beloved Son.

9 He hungry souls with goodness fills
When they to him apply;

Abundant mercies with him dwells
The soul to satisfy.

10 When under affliction they are bound,
And iron bars them tie,

When death's dark vale does mournful sound,

God's helping hand is nigh.

11 The word of God, who is most high,
Shall hypocrites condemn;
Rebelliously they do apply
His precepts unto them.

12 But them he will bring down by grief

That they no helper have;

Yet if their heart turn to belief,

In mercy he will save.

13 From shades of death he will them take, And shelter them by love;

The faithful Christian he will make

To dwell in heaven above.

14 O praise the goodness of the Lord
All ye of human race,

His varied wonders to record
To all the sons of grace.

15 The mighty bars of sin did he
Asunder open wide,

And gates of death and hell for thee
He burst and set aside.

16 But fools for their offences bear
Affliction's heavy load;

They end their days in grief and care
Under the rod of God.

17 By faint degrees they cry to God,
Who them from misery saves,
And thus he blesses by the rod
Chastisements which he gave.

18 They turn to God, who pities them, And their disease does heal;

His pardon does their soul redeem,
For Christ for them does feel.

19 O that all men the Lord would praise,
And on his care depend,
His goodness and his glory raise
To the world's utmost end.

20 Sacrifice unto the Lord do,

And cheerful offerings bring;

Give praise unto God that's due,
And anthems to him sing.

21 They that in ships do trade on sea
Deep wonders they behold,

And in the ocean wonders see
Great and manifold.

22 'Tis God commands the storm to blow, So forth in haste it flies;

The tempest and the waves all know
His word, and quickly rise.

23 Then rise up high big swelling waves,
The ships go up and down,
Whilst every soul with fear dissolves
Under God's angry frown.

24 Then straight they send a mournful cry
When jeopardy draws near,
Who kindly calms the stormy sky
When their prayer he does hear.
25 Then God the stormy winds appease,
Which change at his command;
His will the skies obey, and seas,
When he moves forth his hand.

26 The mariners feel glad again
To find themselves at rest;
And now their haven they obtain,
For God their lives has blest.

27 O then that men would praise the Lord, For his own goodness' sake;

"Tis all Christ's merit to afford,
Such kindness to partake.

28 Unto the poor God gives a place,
Where safely they may dwell;
There quietly to live in peace,
If they but do his will.

29 There fields and vineyards to prepare,
And cities still increase;
His blessing on their cattle are,
That none of them decrease.

30 Again, the princes he casts down,
And setteth up the poor:
If kings the Saviour still disown,
He will not them endure.

31 From sorrow and afflicting cares
Christ will the humble keep;
Celestial mansions he prepares
For all his worthy sheep.

32 In evangelic truth rejoice,

True pleasure it will give;
Praise God with a triumphant voice,
And praise him whilst you live.
33 'Tis saints alone who understand
The goodness of the Lord;

And take delight in his command,
His glory to record.

M

PSALM CVIII.

1 My heart is firmly fix'd, O Lord,
To sing thy noble praise;
Awake, my lute,—my harp, afford,
Sweet notes my voice to raise.

2 My tongue, sing thou immortal praise
Unto God's holy name;
His truth and mercy highly raise,

And celebrate his fame.

3 For high above the heav'n of heav'ns Our sov'reign Lord is crown'd; To him all praise on earth be giv'n, By saints and angels join'd. 4 Extol the heav'nly monarch's name, His starry wonders tell;

Celestial glory loud proclaim,

For he is Lord of all.

5 Them that beloved are by him Are saved by his right hand : Messiah's merits will redeem

Thro' ev'ry distant land.

6 That all God's chosen people be Led to depend on Christ;

In self-denial only see

Him whom their souls can trust.
