2 But thou my shield and glory art,
And comfort of my soul;

O! then uphold my sinking heart
When enemies control.

3 I'll lay me down to rest in bed,
For God preserves me there;
His angel watches round my head,
Though foes against me are.

4 With thanks to God for favours past
Each morning I will rise,

And ask his blessings to the last
In grateful sacrifice.

5 Salvation to the Lord belongs,
His mercies are most sure;

O! praise his name in grateful songs,
Whose goodness shall endure.

6 Through ages that eternal are,
Proclaim his lasting praise;

And through all climes his power declare, His glory high to raise.

PSALM IV.

1 GIVE ear unto my cry, O God!
d help give in distress;

thou my prayer in thine abode,
od of righteousness!

2 How long will you love vanity,
Ye worldly-minded men?
How long live in iniquity
To grieve the Holy One?

3 Sin not; commune with thine own heart On bed, and silent be;

Present thank-offerings on thy part,
Pleasing to God from thee.

4 The Lord himself doth surely know
True followers of Christ;

Each member of the Lamb shall go
Before our great High Priest.

5 O! who will shew us any good?
Is what the wretched say;
God's countenance is light and food
To good men night and day.

6 More gladness in my heart I find,
My God, bestow'd by thee,
Than earthly wealth of varied kind
Could e'er confer on me.

7 Therefore I'll lay me down to sleep,
And quiet rest will take;

For God in safety will me keep,
And sweet my slumber make.

PSALM V.

1 HEARKEN unto my prayer, O Lord, When I to thee do daily pray; Sweet meditation me afford

When I to thee my homage pay. 2 My voice, O Lord, do early hear, For early I will thee address; Bless'd Jesus unto me draw near, Till I to thee my sins confess. 3 Almighty God can all things see, Open and naked to his sight; The wicked cannot dwell with thee, Nor yet can fools in God delight. 4 God does deceit and fraud detest,

And casts them off that liars be; The guilty men for blood that thirst Abhorred surely is by thee.

5 But I unto thy church will go,

And trust in thine abundant grace, To worship God with saints below, Delighting in thy holy place.

6 O God! of our righteousness,

Keep me in thy true faithfulness; So lead me on in holiness

To everlasting blessedness.

7 For mine enemies flatter still,

Still in their mouth there is no truth; Their throat is open to speak ill,

Altho' they're wayward from their youth. 8 O God! the wicked's counsel quell, Their sinful hearts unto thee turn; That they perform thy holy will, And all thy holy precepts learn.

9 Let us, who are but sin and dust, Our God's eternal glory raise, And in redeeming love put trust, To our Redeemer's endless praise. 10 The righteous man God will bless,

And him with favour will surround;
In all things yielding him success,
For God's a shield and buckler found.

PSALM VI.

1 O LORD, my God, rebuke me not,
For I am weak, but pity me;
Be not in thy fierce anger hot,
For now I grieved and vexed be.

2 O Lord! how long wilt thou yet stay?
My soul's o'erwhelm'd with heaviness;
Cast not my hopes in thee away,
But grant me heavenly happiness.
