THESE reminiscences of a brief visit to Paris, in the Autumn of 1853, having been communicated to some private friends, for whom they were written in the first instance, are now committed to the press, in deference to their opinion, and in compliance with their desire. Some things in this Volume might have been different from what they are, if it had been originally intended for publication; particularly there might not have been an admixture of French and English words in the same sentences, which may here and there be found in it. But these have been retained, as they were noted down at the time: and it is hoped that the reader will pardon them. January, 1854. |
