Mess Vest-Blue cloth, French cut. Edged with gold Russia braid round the top, down the front, and along the bottom to the side seams; eye in each corner Crow's foot at each end and centre (top and bottom edges) of pocket. A row of gilt studs, and hooks and eyes down the front.

Helmet.-Same as for the Royal Marine Artillery, with the following exception:

The plate to be a gilt eight-pointed star with dead and bright rays and crown above; the dimensions of the star from top of crown to point of star at bottom 4 15-16ths inches, and 4 inches wide; on the star to be mounted a dead gilt laurel wreath and saw pierced garter with regimental motto "Per Mare, Per Terram," above the garter a gilt scroll "Gibraltar," below it a gilt anchor, and in the centre a silver globe 1 inch diameter. Under the saw pierced garter blue enamel, and below the anchor on the bottom point of star a small silver tie bugle to be mounted.

The bottom central ray of the plate for Royal Marine Light Infantry is to come half way over the cloth band.

Forage Caps (Lieutenant-Colonels, Captains, and Lieutenants)-Blue cloth, gold-embroidered badge, with a silver globe in centre, gold embroidered bugle at top, black oak-leaf band 1 inch wide, with silk button trimmed with eyes of black silk braid on crown. Black leather peak.

Sash, Fulldress.-Gold and crimson net, 24 inches wide, in 4-inch stripes of gold and crimson alternately, gold and crimson runner and tassels. To be worn only on state occasions and at balls.

Sash, Undress.-Crimson silk net.

Sword Belt, Fulldress.-Gold face, of the same pattern as on the fulldress trowsers, lined with crimson morocco leather, slings of similar lace inch wide. To be worn only on state occasions and at balls.

Sword Belt, Undress.-White enamelled leather, l inch wide, with slings 1 inch wide, flap, and gilt hook. Sword. Half-basket hilt and back-piece of gilt metal with device of Royal cipher and crown, and lined with black patent leather, fish-skin grip, bound with gilt wire, slightly curved blade, grooved, and spear-pointed. Scabbard.-Brass, for Field Officers; for other Officers,

steel.

Sword Knot, Fulldress.-Gold and crimson strap, with gold acorn.

Sword Knot, Undress.-White buff leather, and acorn of same material.

Sabretache (for Mounted Officers only).-Black patent leather, fitted with writing and sketching materials, connected with sword-belt by three white patent leather slings, enamelled on both sides, with gilt corps device with motto in centre of same.

Pantaloons (Mounted Officers only).-Blue cloth, with welts as in cloth trowsers.

Boots and Spurs (Mounted Officers, when on mounted duties).-Same as described for Colonels Commandant and Colonels Second Commandant at page 384.

Paymasters, Barrackmasters, and Quartermasters.-To wear the same full and undress uniforms as those for other Officers of corresponding ranks, with the exp tion that Quartermasters are to wear black sword-belts. Note.-Temporary Majors are not to wear the uniform of a Major.

Note.-4th December, 1874.—The Scarlet Patrol Jacket is to be discontinued; but those now in possession may be continued in use, as laid down in existing regalations, until worn out.

Subject to the above exception, Tunics must be worn on all occasions (except when the Blue Patrol Jacket is authorised); but, in order to save expense, Officers may furnish themselves with a second Tunic of serge or light cloth (in all other respects the same as the Regulation Tunic), to be worn upon those duties now sanctioned for the scarlet Patrol Jacket.

ENTRY AND EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS.

REGULATIONS RESPECTING NAVAL CADETS. For the Information of Candidates.

Admiralty, January 1880. 1. Nominations for Naval Cadetships will take place half-yearly immediately after the report of the last examination has been received.

2. An examination of the young gentlemen who have obtained nominations will be held at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, under the direction of the Admiralty Examiners, on the third Wednesday in June and the last Wednesday in November in each year, but the appointments will date from the 15th July and January following respectively.

3. No candidate will be eligible for examination in June whose age will not be within the following limits on the 15th July following:-viz., not less than twelve nor more than thirteen and a half years of age; nor in November whose age will not be within those limits on the 15th January following.

4. Every candidate will be required to pass the medical examination according to the prescribed regulations, and must have been found physically fit for the Royal Navy.

He must be in good health and free from any physical defect of body, impediment of speech, defect of sight or hearing, and also from any predisposition to constitu tional or hereditary disease or weakness of any kind, and in all respects well developed and active in proportion to his age.

Any candidate rejected at the medical examination will, subject to the approval of the Board, be finally excluded from the Royal Navy,

8. A candidate who fails to appear at the examination for which he has obtained his nomination will be finally excluded, except in the case of illness certifed by a physician or surgeon, and approved by their Lordships, in which case the candidate will be allowed to present himself at the following examination, provided he is still within the limits of age; but under

circumstances will such a candidate (be allowed farther postponement of his examination.

9. For all Cadets entered under these regulations, the annual rate of payment will be at the rate of 701. per ram for the period in the "Britannia," to be paid half-yearly in advance to the Accountant-General of the Navy. But the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty reserve the power of selecting from among the candiCates nominated at each half-yearly examination, a number, not to exceed 10, being sons of Officers of the Royal Navy, Army, or Marines, or of Civil Officers under the Board of Admiralty, with respect to whom the annual payment for the two years in the "Britannia" will be of, only. In selecting these their Lordships will have regard solely to the pecuniary circumstances of the parents or guardians of the Cadets.

No application for admission on such reduced scale will be entertained unless made before the candidate is Lominated.

10. The period of training on board the "Britannia " will be, asuow, four terms; there will be two terms in each year. The first term of each year will be from February to July, the second from August to December.

The vacations will be five weeks at Christmas, two weeks at Easter, and six weeks at Midsummer.

11. There will be examinations in Seamanship and Study at the end of each term.

12. Cadets who pass unsatisfactory examinations at the end of any term will be "warned," and they will be liable to be discharged at the end of the following, or any subsequent, term, should they again be reported as failing to attain the proper number of marks at the examinations.

13. The same rule willapply to Cadets who may be reported for unsatisfactory conduct during their service in the "Britannia,"

14 Any Cadet who shall have been specially reported to their Lordships as for any reason unfit for the Service will be removed from the Navy.

15. Cadets will, on passing out of the Training Ship, take the order in which they pass their final examina

The parent or guardian of every Cadet will be required to provide outfit as under the regulations in force Fitherto, and to sign a declaration (on the admission of the Cadet to the "Britannia") to the effect that he shall be immediately withdrawn on the receipt of an official intimation of his being considered unfit for the Royal Jary.

17. Candidates entered under these regulations must understand that they are liable, at any period of their service subsequent to the date of their leaving the Training Ship to be selected to qualify for Gunnery or Torpedo duties of the Service at the discretion of their Lordships.

18 The entry of Navigating Cadets having ceased, all executive officers will be required to carry out the Navigating and Pilotage duties of H.M.'s ships when called on to do so, as laid down in Fleet Circular No. 41, 7th May 1879.

(NAVAL CADETS-REGULATIONS RESPECTING CADETS WHILE UNDER TRAINING.)

(For the information of Parents and Guardians.)

1. The Naval Cadets who join the "Britannia" are abowed four terms-two in each year-to complete their trarse of study; at the expiration of which they go up A taal examínation.

2. The terms are from about the 1st February to the 15th July, and from about the 31st August to the 20th December; and the vacations will be six weeks in Midsummer, five weeks at Christmas, and two weeks at Easter; the dates of commencement of vacation depending upon the completion of the examinations by the President, Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

3. The friends of the Cadets must be prepared to receive them during all the vacations.

4. The following payment will be required from the Parents or Guardians of each Cadet while in the "Britannia":

Before the commencement of each Term £35'; except in the case of those received at the reduced rate of 401. a year, whose half-yearly payments will be 201. only.

5. The payments are to be made according to instructions which will be given in the Half-yearly Claim that will be made by the Accountant-General upon the Parents or Guardians of the Cadets.

6. Great inconvenience having been experienced from these payments not having been punctually made, Cadets, although received until their friends are communicated with, will not be considered as entered for tuition until the amounts due have been received.

7. All travelling expenses for Cadets will be advanced by the Paymaster of the "Britannia," who will charge the same to the Cadet's personal account at the end of each Term.

8. The Cadets have a weekly allowance, and all expenses attending their amusenients are paid for by the Ship. It is therefore requested that their friends do not give them any money except on joining, or on their return from the Vacations, and then the amount must not exceed Ten Shillings. It is particularly requested that this Regulation be adhered to. Such money as may be required by a Cadet for any special circumstances will be advanced by the Paymaster under the authority of the Captain of the "Britannia."

9. It is particularly requested that the Cadets bring their Linen clean, and Clothes and Boots in good order when they join the ship, and also when they return from leave, and that the outfit, as required, be complete.

10. Cadets are not permitted to open an account with Tradesmen. Parents and Guardians are therefore requested to pay no bills that may be sent them.

11. Should there have been any infectious disease in the house where Cadets have been staying during their holidays, notice of the circumstance is to be given to the Commanding Officer of H.M.S. "Britannia"; and they are not to join until they have received a commu. nication from him to that effect.

12. All letters relative to the Cadets should be addressed as follows:-"The Commanding Officer, H.M.S 'Britannia,' Dartmouth."

13. Should Cadets bring valuable Gold Watches Chains with them to the Training Ship, they will be taken from them and placed in security, until they return to their homes. Silver Watches will be allowed to be used.

14. Parents or Guardians of Cadets must, in all cases of permanent change of residence, communicate the same to the Captain of the Training Ship, without delay. By Command of their Lordships,

chool Books and Instruments will be supplied in "Britannia" as required in each Term; but each Cadet, on entering the fourth Term, will be required to provide himself with a sextant, of the approximate value of 71., such instrument being obtained under the direction of the Captain of the "Britannia."

Admiralty, 20th November 1879. EXAMINATION OF NAVAL CADETS FOR THE RANK OF MIDSHIPMAN.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to direct that, as Naval Cadets, who complete the necessary time for passing for the rank of Midshipman before they have served two months in a seagoing ship, have had no opportunity of increasing their professional knowledge, of keeping a log book, or of obtaining instruction in gunnery since leaving the "Britannia," they are to be rated Midshipmen without examination on completing the required period of service. No class is to be awarded to them, and it is to be noted on their Certificates that they have been rated without examination in compliance with this Circular.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to issue the following Regulations in reference to the Periodical Examinations of all Junior Executive Officers of the ranks of Cadet, Midshipman, and Acting SubLieutenant serving in Her Majesty's Fleet.

2. The Examination now held periodically will be continued, commencing on the second Monday in July and December of each year, and will be conducted under the following Regulations:

7. These observations are to be initialled, as having been taken and worked by the Junior Officers, by the Naval Instructor or Officer acting in that capacity, and they are to be revised and valued, in red ink, by him. Observations may be taken till correct results are obtained; by this means every Junior Officer will have the opportunity, by the exercise of due diligence, of ob taining full marks for his sights.

8. A number is to be assigned to each Officer examine, who is to note it on every paper he works out, together with the name of his ship; but he is never to write his name except on the papers containing his observations, 9. No books are to be allowed during the Examination except Tables of Logarithms and the Nautical Almanac. (French Dictionaries and Tables of Logarithms bound up with a Treatise on Navigation are not to be used.)

10. Each Junior Officer's log is to be closely written up, and is to be examined and reported upon.

11. Each Junior Officer is to be examined as to his progress in Seamanship, Gunnery, and Steam; the questions being regulated by length of service, and marks are to be assigned according to proficiency-full numbers being 1,000 for Seamanship, 600 for Gunners, and 400 for Steam,

12. The examination in Seamanship, Gunnery, an Steam is to be conducted by the Officer in command. assisted by the Commander or Senior Lieutenant Gunnery Lieutenant, and Chief Engineer, or oth competent Officers. The examination in Navigation Mathematics, &c., is to be conducted by the Naval Instructor, who, where necessary, is to be assisted by

the Navigating Officer. In those ships where no Naval Instructor is borne the Officer in command will appoint the Navigating or other competent Officer to conduct the examination.

13. If at the time of the written examination two or more ships be in company, it is desirable that they should exchange instructors, so that the examinations should be supervised by a stranger, rather than by an ofcer belonging to the same ship as the pupils.

14. When the examination is concluded, the worked papers are to be examined on board each ship by the Naval Instructor or the Officer who conducted the examiration, who is to inform the Captain, for the information of the Officers examined, of the probable results of the examination. The papers are then to be sent to the fag ship of the squadron or station for the information of the Commander-in-Chief, and are to be examined by the Naval Instructor of that or such other ship as the Commander-in-Chief may direct, who is to issue a statement of the results arrived at by him, which is to be promulgated among the various ships on board which the examinations were held.

All the papers are then to be forwarded to the "Secretary of the Admiralty," with a list of the index numbers, corresponding names, the date on which each Offeer passed out of the Britannia," and the class then obtained for study, together with the marks allotted in Seamanship, Gunnery, and Steam, and also a copy of the provisional statement of results.

15. Should any emergency arise, such as "stress of weather," so as to interfere with the authorised days, the examination is to be held as soon after as circumstances permit, and the Commanding Officer is to report the full circumstances of the case.

Admiralty, 25th February 1879. EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS STUDYING FOR TORPEDO LIEUTENANTS.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to approve of the following regulations for the instruction of Torpedo Lieutenants:

1. Lieutenants desirous of qualifying as Torpedo Lieutenants are, when employed, to be recommended to the Admiralty by their Captains through their Commanders-in-Chief.

2 Appointments will be made to the "Vernon" on the 1st October in each year, and Officers so appointed will remain on the books of that Ship during the whole course. Candidates who have not previously served one year at sea as Lieutenants will, if selected, be appointed to a sea-going ship to complete that period as Officer of the Watch.

The total period of instruction, including a Vacation of three weeks, will be 18 months.

This period will be distributed as follows; viz.,

3. The final examination will be in March, after passing which the Torpedo Lieutenant will, unless his services be imperatively required in a sea-going ship, take part in the Senior Torpedo Course which terminates in June, and assist in the instruction of Officers; if not then required for Sea Service, he will also assist in the Senior Course terminating in September. Between these two courses a period of 14 days leave will be allowed.

4. Should it be found during any part of the course of instruction that a Lieutenant is not likely to prove cient as a Torpedo Officer his name is to be subitted to the Admiralty with a view to his removal from the books of the "Vernon."

For a Certificate in the Practical Course 650 numbers must be obtained.

7. Torpedo Lieutenants will be divided into twoclasses, according to their Certificates in the Theoretical Course. 8. The scale of additional pay to be granted to Torpedo Officers who have qualified under these regulations, while performing Torpedo duties, will be as follows:Torpedo Officers 1st class 38. 6d. per day. 28.6 d.

9. A'Lieutenant appointed to a Ship for Torpedo duties, on attaining the position of Senior Lieutenant of the same ship, provided he combines both duties, and until another Lieutenant is appointed for and commences Torpedo duties, will be entitled to Torpedo allowance, according to his class, in addition to his allowance as Senior Lieutenant.

10. The Staff of Lieutenant Torpedo Instructors in the "Vernon" is to consist of four, including the Lieutenant in Command of the "Vesuvius." The Senior Lieutenant and the Lieutenant in Command of the "Vesuvius" will hold their appointments for three years; the others for two years. Their time whilst holding these appointments will count as does the time of the Staff Officers in the Gunnery ships.

INSTRUCTORS

Admiralty, June 1875.

For the Information of Candidates.

1. No person will be appointed to a Chaplaincy in the Royal Navy who has not been ordained Deacon and Priest of the Church of England, or who has not been admitted to the same Holy Orders by the lawful authority of one of the Churches within the realm of Great Britain and Ireland which are in communion with the Church of England, or whose age exceeds $5 years, or who holds any benéfice with a Cure of Souls, or who does not produce testimonials from the Bishop of the Diocese in which he was last licensed, addressed to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, or who has not been examined by some competent person appointed for that purpose by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, and has been reported by him to be in every respect a fit and proper person to fill the situation of Chaplain with respectability and advantage to Her Majesty's Service.

2. Chaplains to be retired at the age of 60, or at any age if they have not served for 5 years.

3. To have the option of retiring at the age of 55, and to be retired, irrespective of age, at the discretion of their Lordships, if found physically, or from any other cause, unfit to serve.

4. Any Chaplain who obtains from their Lordships permission to accept a living, or desires to retire from the Service, may, if he has not less than 10 years' service, be retired with pay on the following scale, viz. :After 10 years' service.. £50 per annum 100

A similar allowance will be awarded to a Chaplain and Naval Instructor in addition to full-pay when em ployed in the single capacity.

8. Chaplains and Naval Instructors will be allowed on retirement an extra 101, per annum for every four years' service in the double capacity, so long as the present maximum of retired pay of 4501. per annum is not exceeded.

9. Clergymen in Priests' Orders will be allowed to take temporary service in the Navy, without any restriction as to age, and will be appointed "Acting Chap lains for Temporary Service." While so employed they will occupy the same position, enjoy all the same privi leges, and be subject to the same Regulations as ordinary Naval Chaplains. They will receive 2194. a year (or 128. a day); but they will not be entitled to Half-pay, or any other advantages, at the termination of their temporary service. Candidates must present themselves at the Admiralty, bringing with them ther Letters of Orders, Testimonials, &c., preparatory to their being examined by the Chaplain of Greenwich Hospital as to their fitness for these appointments Preliminary applications should be made in writing to the Secretary of the Admiralty.

N.B.-All the above Officers are entitled to be ric tualled when on board ship, or to receive the allowance in lieu (18. 6d. a day) when detached on duty.

Admiralty, 1st Mared 1890. REGULATIONS FOR NAVAL INSTRUCTORS. 1. My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to issue the following regulations for examina tion and instruction, &c. of Naval Instructors:

2. A Candidate for an appointment as Naval Instructor must not be under 20, nor above 35 years of age. He must be prepared to pass a preliminary examination t the following subjects before the Civil Service Commis sioners:

I. Arithmetic and Algebra.

II. Geometry, up to the standard of the 6th Book of Euclid.

III. Plane and Spherical Trigonometry.

IV. Elementary Statics, Dynamics, and Hydro

statics.

V. Latin.

VI. French.

3. In this preliminary examination Latin will be dispensed with in the case of Graduates of any University; and Candidates who, within the previous three years, have obtained at any University a distinction equivalent at least to that of Senior Optime at Cambridge, or a Second Class in the Final Mathematical School & Oxford, will be further exempted from examination in subjects I. to IV.

4. The grounds on which exemption from any part of the preliminary examination is claimed should in cases be fully stated by the Candidate when applying for appointments and their sufficiency will be decide at the Admiralty before the Civil Service Commissioners are asked to conduct the preliminary examination.

5. If found duly qualified in the several subjects of the preliminary examination, the Candidate will receive an
