Dear Sir, --I received your packet last night; I have not had time to-day to read but very little of yours, but I don't doubt of finding your last work as instructive and agreeable as any of the others, and I desire no more. I have just time to let you know that the French have notified to us that if we do not immediately give up the ships and men we have taken, they shall look upon it as a declaration of war, and will act accordingly. We shall not submit to these terms, and war is unavoidable. God send us happily out of it. Adieu. B. Jan. 15, 1756. To Mr. Parry, from Hon. B. Bathurst.1 Dear Sir, --As I promised to trouble you with a letter to give you some account of our transactions here, I shall make use of this leisure day to keep my word with you. The new Ministry seems very desirous of pleasing the people, and are ready to attend to anybody who has anything to offer for the service of the public. They have not yet declared in what manner they will raise the supply of this year, but reckon no more will be wanted than was voted last year, and propose raising this money at 3 per cent., which is supposed to be by a guinea lottery, and the interest will be paid by distinguishing off some part of the Sinking Fund, and I believe not by any new taxes. The alehouse tax, I hear, brings in about 60,0002. for England, and 8,000Z. for Scotland; the plate tax about 22,0002. net money. The cards and dice will bring about 6,000Z. next year; this year about 3,0002.
