Mr. Bridgman hath kist the kings hands to be clark of the councill in Mr. Dives roome, deceased. This day the Spanish ambassador received an express from Ostend that the French appearing before Huy was only a blind to draw our troops that way, while another body attackt Furnes and Dixmude, which our men quitted on the approach of the French, they not being tenable; and sayes further, that on the approach of the confederate army towards Rhinfelden the French raised the seige, and retired. The electoresse of Bavaria is dead at Vienna; 'tis said we had in Furnes and Dixmuyde but 2 cannon, and 300 barrells of powder, with ball proportionable; the rest belonged to the Dutch. Lord Danby and capt. Stringer fought a duell on Saturday; the latter wounded in the thigh. Thursday, 5th Jan.--One Batsill, a young gentleman of the Temple, was committed to Newgate for wounding a captain at the Devill tavern in Fleetstreet on Satturday last. Said our king will raise three new regiments of horse; one of gray, another of bay, and the 3d of black; and 4 more of foot. A letter is come from Pill, near Bristoll, to sir Robert Southwell, giving an account of 27 French men of war, with some forces on board, came into St. Georges channell, where they were overtaken with a violent storm, and being not able to weather it, 6 of their ships were cast away, with 2600 men on board, and 5 more in distresse. Supposed they were intended for Kingsale. Told also of another letter from Hamburgh, of 9 regiments of Swedes and Danes, 900 in each, being ready to embarque under the convoy of 30 men of war, designed for France; but...
