The Impact of Napoleon, 1800-1815: An Annotated BibliographyAccording to Napoleonic expert Louis Villat, the first comprehensive biography of Napoleon dates from 1821, the year of his death. Today, the number of works about Napoleon exceeds 250,000. This is not another biography, nor is it a general history of the period. Rather, it is a work of reference, designed for the interested layperson and scholar alike. It should be of interest not only to those wanting to learn about Napoleon and his tremendous impact upon his times, but also to anyone with a passion for military history and for the history of great leaders and their contributions to history. Summarizing the literature in a clear and concise manner, The Impact of Napoleon, 1800-1815, provides an extended annotated bibliography of printed sources which is intended to include the leading works in all fields of Napoleonic studies, and those works which have been universally recognized for their scholarly merit, for their detail, or for their contributions to historiographical debate. The book is divided into two parts: The first consists of an historiographical essay thath surveys the immense literature about Napoleon and the Napoleonic era, tracing the leading works and schools of thought, and closing with suggestions for further research. The second part of the book is the critical annotated bibliography composed of approximately 480 works, ranging from theses, chapters of books and articles, to full-length multivolume studies. These bibliographical chapters are divided into numerous thematically organized sections and subsections. An author and subject index complete the work. |
