The twin sisters traveled to the Middle East unchaperoned, and carved out for themselves a reputation for religious scholarship and adventure. They organized a caravan to the Monastery of St. Catherine, at the foot of Mt. Sinai. In the monastery's library they found and photographed most of the text of the hitherto undiscovered Syriac version of the Four Gospels. This edition includes a brief new introduction.
