In the Shadow of Sinai: Stories of Travel and Biblical Research

Front Cover
Alpha Press, 1999 - History - 194 pages
Presents two works by two sisters: How the Codex was Found; A Narrative of Two Visits to Sinai from Mrs. Lewis's Journals, 1892- 1893, by Margaret Dunlop Gibson (originally published by Macmillan and Bowes, 1893); and In the Shadow of Sinai; A Story of Travel and Research from 1895 to 1897, by Agnes Smith Lewis (originally published by Macmillan and Bowes, 1898). The twin sisters traveled to the Middle East unchaperoned, and carved out for themselves a reputation for religious scholarship and adventure. They organized a caravan to the Monastery of St. Catherine, at the foot of Mt. Sinai. In the monastery's library they found and photographed most of the text of the hitherto undiscovered Syriac version of the Four Gospels. This edition includes a brief new introduction.
