HE Life of a Christian in this World, THE
ought to be a continued Preparation and fitting himself for another. But especially all
poslīble Care should be taken of that last and folemn Moment, when he is instantly to resign up his Soul, and to appear before the Tribunal of God.
This the generality of Men are willing to do. However they have lived, they would die the Death of the Righteous, and go down to their Graves in Peace. If the Seasons of Life and Grace be not shut upon them suddenly, they are desirous to depart with the good Wishes of their Friends; with the Prayers of their Spiritual Guides ; under the Authentick Seals of the Christian Church, and the facred Pledges of eternal Life.
This Desire is natural to all, who have either the Fears of Men, or the Guilt of Sinners, or the Hopes of Christians; who have not extinguished Reason ; debauched Conscience, and finned away the Belief of another World. This also is very commendable and pious, and (under due Circumstances] of unspeakable Advantage to the dying Penitent. And this was the very thing, the Apostle St. James was insisting upon, and recommending in these Words.
For in the Verse foregoing, he had been discourfing to the Christians, by what honest Ways and innocent Diversions, they might maintain an even Temper and chearfulness of Mind, under the several Providences of God towards them.

If they were affli&ted, or under Persecution for the Sake of their Religion ; he ad viseth them to have recourse to God by Prayer and Supplication. Is any among you afli&ted?
If their Condition was fo Peaceable and Happy, as to dispose them to Joy and Mirth, he bids them use Thanksgiving and Pfalmody. Is any Merry? Let him fing Psalms
If they were sick, he exhorts them to call for their Spiritual Physician; the Bishop or Pastor, under whose immediate Care they lived ; and to make use of those powerful and extraordinary Means which were then in the Church. Is any Sick among you? Let him call for the Elders of the Church; and let them pray over him, anointing bim with Oil in the Name of the Lord.
This Text is One, I think the Principal One, upon which the Church of Rome hath built the Doctrine, or(as she calls it) the Sacrament. of extreme Un&tion. And therefore Elius hạth this bold Gloss upon the Words. From this Place of St. James, Says be the Fatbers of the Councel of Trent, and with them all the Orthodox, kave rightly determined, and proved that extreme Unction is derived from, Apostolical Tradition ; and that it is truly and properly a Sacrament of the new Law. The Councel thus delivers it felf. Extreme Un&tion was instituted by our Saviour, as a Sacrament of the Newe-Testament, truly and properly so called; and published by St. James to the
