JANE CALDECOTT.

A Story of Cross-Purposes.

By J. E. PANTON.

2 VOLS., 21s.

"MRS. PANTON demonstrates an inherited power of dealing pictorially and incisively with scene, story, and character. The daughter of Mr. W. P. Frith, R.A., this lady shows, if in a minor degree, something of the modern Hogarth's power of moulding truth and reality to the purposes of fable. Though this story is a well-woven plot of Cross-purposes,' and though the interest is sustained in a course of events that flows freely, freshly, and naturally, it is the series of minutely and vividly painted pictures of life, full of a homely grace and spirit, which will in the main commend the volumes to public favour." -Daily Telegraph.

DEDICATION.

TO MRS. HARRIOTT WILLIAMSs this novel, which was in great part rewritten under her hospitable roof, is dedicated, in memory of her valued friend the late Lady Dalling and Bulwer. I had originally promised to inscribe it, at her express request, to this regretted lady. It was but a poor way of expressing my gratitude and respect for one who through many years was incessantly kind, and who, together with her celebrated husband, Lord Dalling and Bulwer, and his no less illustrious brother, Lord Lytton, first gave me encouragement in my literary career. But since the completion of the story this estimable lady has died; I therefore feel that I only fulfil her wishes in offering its dedication to one who was to her so close and true a friend, and to myself even as a second mother.
