OCT. 1. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land; but if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

What shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God? 1 Peter iv. 17.

Think on the end of disobedience, &c.
Pray for a willing and obedient heart.

OCT. 2. Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord. Jer. xxiii. 24.

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Cor iv o

Reflect on God's unlimited knowledge.

Pray that you may receive his approbation in that day when the secrets of all hearts shall be disclosed.

OCT. 3. Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee. Prov. iii. 29. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Rom. xiii. 10. Meditate on the love and kindness which Christians ought to have for each other.

Pray that you may be possessed of all Christian virtues.

OCT. 4. Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he answered them. Psalm xcix. 5, 6.

The effectual fervent prayer of á righteous man availeth much. James v. 16.

Observe the encouragements before you to induce you to pray.

Pray frequently and fervently.

OCT. 5. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I

the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Jer. xvii. 9, 10.

To them who by patient continuance in weldoing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: but unto them that are contentious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil. Rom. ii. 7. 8. 9.

Consider the danger of disobeying or rejecting the Gospel, &c.

Pray that you may believe all the precious promises of the Gospel, and at the last be made a partaker of eternal life.

OCT. 6. When the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. Ezek. xviii. 27.

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out. Acts iii. 19.

Reflect on the necessity of repentance, &c. Pray for true repentance for all your past transgressions, &c.

Ост. 7. Who shall ascend into the hill of the

Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Psalm xxiv. 3, 4, 5.

The Scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Rom. x. 11.

Meditate on the character of him who shall be worthy to be a citizen of God's spiritual kingdom. Pray for your heart to be made pure by the atoning blood of Christ, and by the cleansing Spirit of God.

OCT. 8.

Consider the wondrous works of God. Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine? Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge? Job xxxvii. 14, 15, 16.

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been his counsellor? or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? Rom. xi. 34, 35.

Meditate on the wondrous works of God, &c. Pray to him with a thankful heart, &c.

OCT. 9. And he shall make an atonement for

the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar: and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation. And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. Lev. xvi. 33, 34.

Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Heb. x. 9, 10.

Reflect on the insufficiency of the Levitical sacrifices to make atonement for sin, when contrasted with the all-sufficient sacrifice of Christ.

Pray to God in Christ's only prevailing name.

OCT. 10. His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem. Solomon's Song v. 16.

Christ is all. and in all Col. iii. 11.

Meditate on the character here given of Christ. Pray that He may impart to you his graces, &c.
