Paymasters, Barrackmasters, and Quartermasters.-To wear the same full and undress uniforms as those for other Officers of corresponding ranks, with the exceptions that the cocked hat is to be worn with fulldress, and that Quartermasters are to wear black sword-belts. Paymasters and Barrackmasters to wear no feather in cocked hat; Quartermasters to wear a green cock's feather, 5 inches long, mushroom shape; the hats to have a loop of corps lace, and crape fringed tassels.

Note.-Temporary Majors are not to wear the unl of a Major.

Note.-4th December, 1874.-The Scarlet Patre! m is to be discontinued; but those now in possession be continued in use, as laid down in existing 2 tions, until worn out.

Subject to the above exception, Tunics ranst bes on all occasions (except when the Blue Patrol Jas authorised); but, in order to save expense, Office furnish themselves with a second Tunic of serger cloth (in all other respects the same as the ker Tunic), to be worn upon those duties now sanct for the scarlet Patrol Jacket.

'Admiralty, 8th March 1870. COLONIAL CADETS.

With reference to the Regulations respecting Naval Cadets contained in Circular No. 8 of the 6th January 1870, my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to issue the following Regulations in regard to the Entry, Passage to England, and Pay, &c. of Colonial Cadets.

In

1. Cadets examined in the Flag Ships abroad will, if they pass, be entered as Supernumeraries for Victuals only, and sent home in any Man-of-War or Transport about to leave for England, to join the "Britannia.' the event of no such Ship being about to leave for England, passage, including mess, at the public expense, will be provided for them by Mail Packet, or by private ship the latter being preferred where the Packet fares are high.

2. They will not count time or receive pay until they join the "Britannia," and arrangements are to be made that, if possible, they may arrive in England a short time before the commencement of a term, t.e., before the 1st February or the 31st August; and Parents are to arrange for the payments, on their account, being received by the Accountant-General prior to the Cadets' joining the "Britannia."

REGULATIONS RESPECTING NAVAL CADETS.

For the Information of Candidates.

Admiralty, August 1877. 1. Nominations for Naval Cadetships will take place half-yearly immediately after the report of the last examination has been received.

2. An examination of the young gentlemen who have obtained nominations will be held at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, under the direction of the Admiralty Examiners, on the third Wednesday in June and the last Wednesday in November in each year, but the appointments will date from the 15th July and January following respectively.

3. No candidate will be eligible for examination în June whose age will not be within the following limits on the 15th July following:-viz., not less than twelve nor more than thirteen and a half years of age; nor in November whose age will not be within those limits on the 15th January following.

4. Every candidate will be required to pass the medical examination according to the prescribed regulations, and must have been found physically fit for the Royal Navy.

He must be in good health and free from any physical defect of body, impediment of speech, defect of sight or hearing, and also from any predisposition to constitntional or hereditary disease or weakness of any kind, and

in all respects well developed and active in proper his age.

Any candidate rejected at the medical erant will, subject to the approval of the Board, be in cluded from the Royal Navy.

5. Cadets, although received until their friends are communicated with, will not be considered as entered for tuition until the amounts due have been received.

7. All travelling expenses for Cadets will be advanced by the Paymaster of the "Britannia," who will charge the same to the Cadet's personal account at the end of each Term.

8. The Cadets have a weekly allowance, and all expenses attending their amusements are paid for by the Ship. It is therefore requested that their friends do not give them any money except on joining, or on their return from the Vacations, and then the amount must not exceed Ten Shillings. It is particularly requested that this Regulation be adhered to. Such money as may be required by a Cadet for any special circumstances will be advanced by the Paymaster under the authority of the Captain of the "Britannia."

9. It is particularly requested that the Cadets bring their Linen clean, and Clothes and Boots in good order, when they join the ship, and also when they return from leave, and that the outfit, as required, be complete.

10. Cadets are not permitted to open an account with Tradesmen. Parents and Guardians are therefore requested to pay no bills that may be sent them.

11. Should there have been any infectious disease in the house where Cadets have been staying during their holidays, notice of the circumstance is to be given to the Commanding Officer of H.M.S. "Britannia "; and they are not to join until they have received a communication from him to that effect.

12. All letters relative to the Cadets should be addressed as follows:-"The Commanding Officer, H.M.S. 'Britannia,' Dartmouth."

13. Should Cadets bring valuable Gold Watches or Chains with them to the Training Ship, they will be taken from them and placed in security, until they return to their homes. Silver Watches will be allowed to be used.

14. Parents or Guardians of Cadets must, in all cases of permanent change of residence, communicate the same to the Captain of the Training Ship, without delay. By Command of their Lordships,

Pea Jackets are not to be supplied, as the thick Working Jacket can be worn over the Uniform Jacket, if necessary.

Clothing to be distinctly marked with the Cadet's Name in full.

NOTE. Trowsers to be made without pockets, and only one pocket on the left breast of the Jackets of the two Working Uniform Suits.

School Books and Instruments will be supplied in "Britannia" as required in each Term.

Admiralty, 19th November 1877. PERIODICAL EXAMINATIONS OF JUNIOR EXECUTIVE OFFICERS ON BOARD HER MAJESTY'S SHIPS.

(Revising Circular, No. 21, C.W., of 1st May 1875.) My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to issue the following Regulations in reference to the Periodical Examinations of all Junior Executive Officers of the ranks of Cadet, Midshipman, Acting Sub-Lieutenant, and the corresponding Officers of the Navigating Class, serving in Her Majesty's Fleet.

2. The Examination now held annually will be continued, commencing on the second Tuesday in July, and is to be conducted under the following Regulations:

2nd. In lieu of the present system of payment of officers serving as Chaplains of Her Majesty's Dockyards, Hospitals, and Marine Divisions, such officers to be paid as follows, viz. :

"Officers holding the joint position of Chaplain and Naval Instructor

"To receive full-pay as Chaplain according to service, the allowance according to the foregoing scale for service in the double capacity: civil allowance of 1001. per annum if occupying an official residence, if not 1501. per annum; but so regulated that the total emoluments (inclusive of residence or house allowance) should not exceed a maximum of 5501. per annum.

"Officers holding the rank of Chaplain only

"To receive the same, with the exception of the allowance for service in the double capacity.

"3rd. In the case of any officer now holding such position, whose total emoluments are larger than those he would receive by the proposed scale, no reduction to be made.

4th. In the case of the retirement of officers holding the double position of Chaplain and Naval Instructor, an extra 10 per annum to be awarded for every four years' service in the double capacity, so long as the present maximum retired pay of 4501. per annum is not exceeded.

"5th. The following Scale of Pensions and Compassionate Allowances to be established for the widows and children of Chaplains and Naval Instructors, subject to existing regulations, such scale to apply only to the widows and children of officers now, and hereafter to be, on the Active List:

For the Information of Candidates.

1. No person will be appointed to a Chaplaincy in the Royal Navy who has not been ordained Deacon and Priest of the Church of England, or who has not been admitted to the same Holy Orders by the lawful authority of one of the Churches within the realm of Great Britain and Ireland which are in communion with the Church of England, or whose age exceeds 35 years, or who holds any benefice with a Cure of Souls, or who does not produce testimonials from the Bishop of the Diocese in which he was last licensed, addressed to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, or who has not

been examined by some competent person appointed for that purpose by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, and has been reported by him to be in every respect a fit and proper person to fill the situation of Chaplain with respectability and advantage to Her Majesty's Service.

2. Chaplains to be retired at the age of 60, or at any age if they have not served for 5 years.

3. To have the option of retiring at the age of 55, and to be retired, irrespective of age, at the discretion of their Lordships, if found physically, or from any other cause, unfit to serve.

4. Any Chaplain who obtains from their Lordships permission to accept a living, or desires to retire from the Service, may, if he has not less than 10 years' service, be retired with pay on the following scale, viz. :After 10 years' service.. £50 per annum
