CLASSES AND DENOMINATIONS OF HER MAJESTY'S SHIPS. (Under revision.)

1. Rated Ships, that is to say, Ships registered on the List of the Royal Navy, under one of the six following Rates,

First Rates, to comprise all Ships carrying 110 Guns and upwards, or the complements of which consist of 1000 Men or more;

Second Rates, to comprise one of Her Majesty's Yachts, and all Ships carrying under 110 Guns, and more than 80 Guns, or the complements of which are under 1000, and not less than 800 Men;

Third Rates, to comprise Her Majesty's other Yachts, and all such Vessels as may bear the Flag or Pendant of any Admiral Superintendent or Captain Superintendent of one of Her Majesty's Dockyards; and all Ships carrying 80 and not less than 60 Guns; or the complements of which are under 800, and more than 600 Men;

Fourth Rates, to comprise all Friga built Ships of which the comp ments are 600, and not less th 410 Men;

Fifth Rates, to comprise all Ships complements of which are 400, not less than 300 Men; and Sixth Rates, to consist of all of Ships bearing a Captain.

2. Sloops,

To comprise all Vessels comman by Commanders, and carrying t principal armament on one c in broadside ports.

3. Gun Vessels,-

To comprise all Vessels comman by Commanders, and carrying t principal armament on one d amid ships.

4. All other ships and smaller ves commanded by Lieutenants.

The Ships are arranged alphabetically. The numbering has no reference to the Ambers of Ships on the Lists of the Royal Navy, being only used to indicate where Officers are serving.)
